Tuesday Recap

Van Gerwen and Van Barneveld proved why they are genuine legends of the sport as they played out one of the great battles in world darts history. Both men brought their best game to the oche, but it was Van Barneveld who prevailed in a glutinous feast of darts.
Top seed and 2014 champion Van Gerwen took the opening set and seemed set to continue his rampant form at this competition. And in fairness, he did maintain an immaculate standard, but MvG was simply matched all the way by his compatriot, who was scoring heavily and finishing with ruthlessness.
Indeed, Van Barneveld roared back into this one, going 2-1 and then 3-2 ahead after Van Gerwen had levelled things up at 2-2, with a stunning 170 checkout along the way. As we can see here courtesy of the PDC account, despite being the toughest checkout on the board, the former champion made it look easy:
In the sixth set, the top seed again showed his quality with a 121 finish under immense pressure, giving this thrilling match the decider it deserved.
But Van Barneveld drew on every sinew of his experience to preserve an edge in the final set and take a memorable 4-3 victory. The quality of the contest is illustrated in the fact that Van Gerwen's three-dart average of 105.78 is the highest ever by a losing player in the tournament's history, per BBC Sport.
Commentator Rod Studd was left breathless by one of the greatest matches in history:

It was a great night too for the holder of the Sid Waddell Trophy, as Anderson swept into the quarter-finals. The world No. 2 was in top form as the Flying Scotsman grabbed a 4-0 win.
Anderson did not concede a single leg against the Dutch Destroyer in the first three sets, checking out with efficiency to take the wind from Van der Voort's sails.
Anderson told PDC darts he was delighted with the win against a difficult opponent:

Two-time champion Adrian Lewis comfortably beat Austrian Suljovic at the start of the evening session, winning 4-0 with consummate ease. Jackpot was in no mood to let the Gentle into the match, and he dominated throughout.
Lewis hit a 180 in the opening leg and never looked back, as Suljovic fought against the current to stay in touch. The former champ posted a three-dart average of 98.69 to sink his opponent, and he will be one to watch in the next round.

Smith was in exceptional form on Tuesday afternoon as the Bully Boy from Merseyside disposed of Big Ben. Dutchman Van de Pas couldn't keep up with the 2013 PDC under-21 world champion, as he hit 12 three-dart maximums of 180 to progress.
The first set was a tight affair, as Van de Pas hit a stunning 148 finish, but it was his best effort of the day as Smith stepped through the gears. The St. Helens player won the opening set 3-2 and never looked back.
The Dutchman could only manage to win one more leg in the following nine, as Smith swept to a comprehensive whitewash to take a place in the last eight.

It was a difficult afternoon for Wade, but Caven failed to take a multitude of chances to cause a shock. The Machine looked out of sorts at the oche and could not produce his best darts at any point; however, Jabba didn't have the quality to win the tie, losing 4-1.
The match was a tight affair early on, as they grabbed an opening set apiece, but Caven fell away as Wade stumbled forward. The Englishman laboured to take the following three sets and achieve the victory, as Wade clearly suffered with a heavy cold throughout the contest.
In Tuesday's second-round match, Jelle Klaasen beat Mervyn King 4-2.
It was a historic night for Barney as he produced one of his greatest performances to beat Mighty Mike. The veteran now has a viable chance of capturing his sixth world darts championship, and his second PDC crown.
For Van Gerwen, he'll have to wait another year to add to his solitary 2014 PDC world title.
