Ty Detmer Hired as BYU OC: Latest Comments and Reaction
Days after Brigham Young University tabbed Kalani Sitake as its new head coach, the former BYU running back has brought another ex-Cougar aboard to try to help lead the team into a prosperous new era.
Thursday, the school announced former quarterback and 1990 Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer has been hired as BYU's new offensive coordinator.
BYU also released a statement confirming the move, according to Jake Hatch of 1280 AM The Zone in Salt Lake City:
According to the Austin American-Statesman's Rick Cantu, Detmer is returning to BYU following a stint as the head football coach at St. Andrew's High School. And as Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith noted, that's the only coaching job Detmer held prior to his appointment by Sitake.
Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman provided his take on the announcement:
"How many coaches get a chance to go back to their alma mater as an offensive coordinator?" Detmer said, per Cantu. "I told them I would not go back just to be a position coach. I didn’t want to be a position coach and have to work my way up."
While Detmer doesn't have much in the way of a coaching pedigree, he was one of the most prolific passers in NCAA history during his time at BYU.
After throwing for 4,560 yards and 32 touchdowns as a sophomore, Detmer posted an NCAA-best 5,188 yards and 41 scores en route to claiming the 1990 Heisman. As a senior, Detmer topped 4,000 and tossed another 35 touchdowns to cap off his career in style before playing the role of journeyman quarterback in the NFL.
Since Sitake is renowned as a strong defensive tactician, it makes sense that he'd want to turn to a familiar face and former Cougar great to run BYU's offense.
But considering Detmer wields little in the way of high-level coaching experience, the Cougars should need some time to adjust as they get acclimated to a new scheme and a restructured staff.
