Tuesday Recap

Huybrechts and Winstanley treated the London crowd to a fascinated opening match on Tuesday night, as the former progressed 3-2 in a last-gasp shootout.

The match was strewn with errors as both men tried to throw it away at various points.

Yorkshireman Winstanley cleaned up in the first set without dropping a leg, hitting a 96 checkout to steal a break of throw.

Huybrechts made it 1-1 after Winstanley lost momentum, but the Swinton ace hit back in the third set, landing a brilliant 120 finish to make it 2-1.

However, his 50-year-old Belgian opponent swept three legs in a row in the fourth to tie the match at 2-2, as Winstanley looked mystified at the oche.

The two stood toe-to-toe in the final set as they battled to stay in the tournament, but it was Huybrechts who grabbed the glory with a 6-4 final-leg winning effort.

The Rebel prevailed with a 91.14 three-dart average, as Over The Top struggled with his technique as the match progressed.

PDC Darts shared the winner's final moment at the Ally Pally:

Newton's recent poor form continued on Tuesday, but the world No. 26 gritted his teeth and pushed hard against Spain's Reyes.

The Warrior strolled to a two-set advantage as the Spartan failed to string together a challenge, but it was clear Newton was nowhere near his previously best form.

Live Darts highlighted how poor Newton's efforts really were despite his positive position:

Reyes won a set back to make the match interesting as Newton showed no signs of improvement or additional confidence.

However, just as the Spaniard looked like he would tie the scores, Newton burst into life with a tremendous checkout to take a two-leg lead in the fourth, per Live Darts:

Newton kept his head above water as he dragged himself across the line, obtaining a 3-1 win despite a torrid night at the oche.

The Blackpool player will have to up his game and correct his action in the next round as he runs into the brilliant James Wade, who will be the overwhelming favourite on form alone.

Rodriguez was all smiles as he strutted with swagger to the stage to face two-time major finalist Chisnall. The PDC gave the tale of the tape as the youngster faced off against the star:

Chizzy was having trouble on his doubles as his junior opponent took the first leg with a delightful 107 finish, but the experienced Englishman corrected his game to significantly drive up his three-dart average.

However, with the legs tied at 2-2, it was Chisnall who overcame the bombastic Little John to go 1-0 in a tough first set.

Rodriguez continued to play joyous darts in the second, but the Premier League semi-finalist stole the set to make it 2-0, as the 21-year-old made mistakes at vital points—showing his lack of experience.

However, the fearless Austrian nailed a 170 checkout in the second leg of the third set, proving he is one of the great burgeoning talents in the sport. The crowd responded to the kid as he rapidly moved through the gears to the loud cheers of the Ally Pally audience.

Suddenly, Chisnall began to show nerves as his arm stiffened as Rodriguez's scattergun darts entertained, but the St Helens player hit a timely 180 and finish to peg back his opponent.

Chizzy found enough form in the final leg and took the match 3-0 with a well-taken double. Live Darts highlighted the peak of Chisnall's performance to beat the promising Rodriguez:

Nine-time PDC major finalist Jenkins struggled against relaxed American kingpin Young but eventually crafted a 3-1 win.

Big Daddy took the opening leg as his cool and calm style dominated, but the Bull raised his head and upped his game, tying two legs apiece in the opener.

However, it was the American who dug deep to shock the No. 11 seed, claiming the first set against the run of play.

Jenkins looked worried at the start of the second but stormed back to claim the set and tie the scores with sumptuous finishing.

The Bull swept to the third as Young began to falter under the pressure, and Jenkins pulled himself over the line to grab a decisive final set.

Chisnall looked comfortable on the night, but the London crowd will remember Rodriguez's contribution, taking his senior opponent to five legs in every set.

The Austrian has the tools to become a future world champion, and at the tender age of 21, he looks like a future great of the sport.

If Little John can control his action and find a consistent double finish, he surely has a big future ahead of him—filled with major titles and trophies.
