Basketball Hall of Fame 2016 Ballot: Full List of Candidates and Reaction
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced the nominees for its 2016 class on Monday, highlighted by longtime Philadelphia 76ers guard Allen Iverson and four-time NBA champion Shaquille O’Neal.
You can see the full list of nominees at HoopHall.com.
First-time nominees like Iverson and O'Neal are eligible under the Hall's new eligibility rules, which allow for players to be nominated four years after they retire—not five years, as was the case under the old rules.
"We wanted to get more in line with some of the other Halls, and it just seemed like too long of a wait for some of the individuals," Hall chairman Jerry Colangelo said on SportsCenter (via ESPN.com).
Iverson was one of the game's most dynamic players during his 14-year career, making 11 All-Star teams and winning the league MVP in the 2000-01 season. He led the league in points scored per game four times and guided the Philadelphia 76ers to the NBA Finals in the 2000-01 season.
Those Sixers lost to O'Neal's Los Angeles Lakers. O'Neal, one of the most dominant big men to ever play the game, was a 15-time All-Star, the league MVP in 1999-00, a three-time NBA Finals MVP and a two-time scoring champion.
Tom Izzo highlights the list of coaches eligible for induction. The longtime Michigan State head coach has led the Spartans to seven Final Fours and a national championship in 2000.
Other notable names among former players include power forward Chris Webber and center Yao Ming. On the women's side, Rebecca Lobo and Sheryl Swoopes are among the highlights, while announcer Marv Albert is up for induction for the first time in the "contributor" category.
