Todd Bowles Comments on Ryan Fitzpatrick's Future with Jets

Danny WebsterDec 14, 2015

The New York Jets are 8-5 and inching closer to a playoff spot in Todd Bowles' first year as the team's head coach.

One of the reasons why the Jets have been playing so well has been quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who is having the best season of his career in his first year with the Jets.

When asked if he would like Fitzpatrick to be back next year, Bowles summed it up succinctly, per Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

"Definitely," Bowles said. “We got to work (it out) after the season."

This is the first time in Fitzpatrick's career that he's been on a team with a winning record this late in the season. The former Harvard quarterback, who is playing for his sixth team in his 11-year career, has thrown for 3,129 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2015.

The 25 touchdowns are a career high for Fitzpatrick.

“That’s been my whole career: I’ve been the afterthought,” Fitzpatrick said, per Mehta. “I’ve gotten used to it. It’s kind of what everybody thinks. I like playing the role of the underdog. That’s fine with me. I just want to go out there and win. That’s it.”

It helps that Fitzpatrick has two talented receivers to throw the ball to.

Brandon Marshall continues to show why he’s one of the most reliable receivers in the NFL. Marshall was traded for the third time in his career in the offseason but became the first player in NFL history to record 1,000-yard seasons with four different teams. No matter where he's been, he's been reliableand he has been a difference-maker for the Jets this season.

Eric Decker is putting together his best season since signing with the Jets as a free agent in 2014. The former Broncos receiver has 875 yards and nine touchdowns this year and is inching toward his first 1,000-yard season since 2013.

Fitzpatrick has been nothing short of a godsend for the Jets, especially after the Geno Smith-IK Enemkpali incident that happened in training camp. The Jets are inching closer to their first playoff appearance since 2010, and Fitzpatrick has been a major reason why.
