Manchester United Transfer News: Huge Romelu Lukaku Bid Planned, Latest Rumours

Rob BlanchetteDec 13, 2015

Manchester United are planning a mammoth £50 million bid in January for Everton's Romelu Lukaku, as the Belgium international takes the Premier League by storm.

Italian website Tuttomercatoweb (h/t Metro and the Irish Independent) claim the Red Devils will make a €70 million move for the Goodison Park forward that would represent the club's biggest ever outlay on a striker.

Lukaku is in the best form of his career, and despite being only 22, he is a seasoned Premier League attacker. United have been missing this element with the additions of Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial, who both lack grounding in the English game.

The Toffees striker has 12 goals in only 16 appearances in the league this season, according to WhoScored.com. He would possibly add the missing firepower to the United's lame front line.

Lukaku scored for his sixth Premier League game running against Norwich City on Saturday, and he is closing in on Jamie Vardy's recently earned goal record for consecutive games, as reported by the Press Association (h/t Guardian).

Everton boss Roberto Martinez praised his centre-forward after the match, and spoke of his consistent threat, per the Press Association:

"

That’s where you judge a striker. It’s the amount of threat he carries. The clear-cut chances he produced is a very positive sign. On another day he would have scored four goals, or a hat-trick. It’s been another top performance from him. It’s just making sure he keeps creating chances, because it’s very rare that he’s not going to convert more than the one he did today.

"

Bleacher Report's Matt Jones also praised the player in a recent blog, highlighting Lukaku's diversity of weapons: "There’s a panache about the young forward. Already he’s scored a variety of different goals, improving his penalty box play, work in the air and decision-making in dangerous areas."

United have been in a state of flux this term—remaining in the top part of the Premier League while never hitting their maximum potential.

Manager Louis van Gaal has pushed his defensive tactical approach on his side, and it's had a draining impact on the attack.

Wayne Rooney is a shadow of himself, but his absence in the past two games has seen United collapse to defeat at Wolfsburg and Bournemouth, with their watertight defence falling to pieces.

Reports have also said United are to add a number of prodigious youngsters to their ranks, with three players in the pipeline.

The Mail (h/t Irish Independent) reported 15-year-old Nishan Burkhart  from FC Zurich, Juan Familia-Castillo from Ajax and United States youth international Matt Olosunde from New York Red Bulls could all be about to sign deals at United.

The urgency for Van Gaal to sign players in January has now reached crisis, and the addition of Lukaku would placate a number of worried United supporters.

There is significant unrest in the stands at Old Trafford, and booing was clearly heard at the end of the recent Premier League game with West Ham United.

The period of goodwill is over between coach and supporters, and a poor second half of the campaign will trigger vocal unrest from the United faithful.

Lukaku is still very young, but he has the clear power and goal record United need from a new signing. Martial would hugely benefit from playing off the No. 9 in the final third of the pitch, and there's a chance the pair could become one of European football's most dangerous combinations.
