HS Football Player Investigated for Attempted Murder Helps Team Win Championship
Grand Street Campus running back Rahmel Ashby, who is currently under investigation for attempted murder, rushed for 116 yards over the weekend to help his team win a PSAL Championship Division title on Sunday.
Grand Street defeated Erasmus Hall, 28-26, in the championship game played at Yankee Stadium, per Dylan Santos of the New York Daily News. Ashby ran the ball 24 times and played a starring role in the Wolves' game-icing drive.
His performance will do little to quell concerns many had about his being on the field in the first place. Ashby was arrested twice on gun-related charges in the past two years. On April 29, 2014, he allegedly fired a gun into a crowd of people, injuring three. While out on $50,000 bond, he was arrested again this past October and charged with gun possession, per the New York Daily News' Julian Garcia, Denis Slattery and Ben Kochman.
Rather than being incarcerated prior to his trial, Ashby was given bond again and made it once more at $50,000, according to NY1's Michael Herzenberg. Grand Street continued to allow him to play despite the controversy, as there are no eligibility requirements addressing criminal allegations.
"We never think about negativity at Grand Street Campus," quarterback Sharif Harris-Legree said, per Santos. "He's a great kid, he's qualified and he's our brother."
Ashby is scheduled to face the attempted murder charges in January, according to Steven J. Gaither of Sporting News.
