Calgary Hitmen Break 'Teddy Toss' Record with 28,815 Stuffed Toys on the Ice
The "Teddy Toss" deserves to be a lot more famous than it is.
The event, which seems popular among minor league hockey teams, revolves around fans heaving stuffed animals onto the ice after the home team's first goal.
Lots of ‘em. Seriously.
Chris Peters of CBSSports.com explains:
"The goal of this is to get fans to come to the rink with a stuffed toy to donate to children less fortunate. Some teams offer discounted tickets with the donation. But they also try to make donation submission fun. Basically, once the home team scores their first goal, that's the fans' cue to start chucking the fluffy fellas to the ice.
"
The Calgary Hitmen, a team in the Western Hockey League, bring in over 20,000 animals each December, according to Peters. This year, they broke their own record with an astronomical 28,815 bears.
Calgary’s stadium holds under 20,000 fans, which means people were so into it that they brought multiple toys.
Here’s another angle of the teddy bear shower:
The players seem to enjoy it, too:
