Michael Phelps at Winter National Championships 2015: Friday Results, Reaction
Michael Phelps is still good at swimming.
After a fourth-place finish in the men's 200-meter medley heat Thursday, Phelps responded Friday by winning the 100-meter butterfly at the 2015 AT&T Winter National Championships in Federal Way, Washington.
Phelps had to make a late charge to pass Tom Shields for the national title, winning by 0.03 seconds. USA Swimming tweeted out the winning result:
Here's a full breakdown of the results:
| Place | Swimmer | Time |
| 1 | Michael Phelps | 51.38 |
| 2 | Tom Shields | 51.41 |
| 3 | Luis Martinez | 52.35 |
| 4 | Santo Condorelli | 52.41 |
| 5 | Masa Kishida | 52.73 |
| 6 | Kyler Van Swol | 53.13 |
| 7 | David Nolan | 53.51 |
| 8 | Albert Subirats | 53.84 |
Shields held the lead up until halfway after the turn, and that's when Phelps turned on the afterburners and was able to touch the wall just in time for the win.
"I'm happy," Phelps said after the race. "Within a second of where I was last summer. I think it's a good place to be. ... I'm taking that time."
Phelps announced Wednesday that the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will be his last ever. Despite turning 30 years old in June and winning his 60th national title Thursday, Phelps showed he has plenty of juice left and should be able to win a number of races in Rio next summer.
"It's really just trying to swim the fastest times that I can unshaved," Phelps said. "To be where I am right now—and to be kind of unshaved, unrested and be able to swim some of the fastest times I've been able to swim in season in my life—I think it's a good sign."
If he's able to swim this fast during the Olympics, the United States will once again be in good hands with Phelps at the helm in the pool.
