Friday Night Reaction
Of course all eyes were on Phelps, but there were some other impressive performances. Olympic gold medalist Dana Vollmer was under 58 seconds in the 100 fly for the first time in two years, per Swimming World Magazine.
SwimSwam Live showed just how impressive her time of 57.95 was:
Another Olympic gold medalist, Missy Franklin, took home a victory Friday. After coming up just short in the 200-meter freestyle, she finished first in the 100-meter backstroke. She proved you can overcome a subpar prelim, per the Indianapolis Star's David Woods:
Chase Kalisz, who trains with Phelps as part of the North Baltimore Athletic Club, dominated the field in the 400-meter individual medley, nearly eight seconds faster than second-place Max Williamson.
Phelps' mom Debbie sent a congratulatory tweet Kalisz's way after he won:
Yet, it's her son who always gets most of the attention at any race he competes in, and it was no different at the National Championships.
Per Swimming World Magazine, Phelps is "showing he’s in good form heading down the final stretch to the 2016 Rio Olympics," and he certainly looked the part as well, shown here after his second championship in as many days, per USA Swimming:
After Day 2 was over, some of the swimmers hung around to show their appreciation for the fans, including 12-time Olympic medalist Natalie Coughlin, who took fourth in the 100 back, per USA Swimming:
The National Championships conclude Saturday with another slate of morning and evening races. The schedule can be found here.
