Nick Foles Named Rams Starting QB vs. Cardinals: Latest Comments, Reaction

Alec NathanDec 3, 2015

Nick Foles is slated to start consecutive games under center for the St. Louis Rams a week after head coach Jeff Fisher's squad was drubbed by the Cincinnati Bengals.

According to ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner, Fisher announced Foles will start Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals with fellow signal-caller Case Keenum still going through the league's concussion protocol. Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch added Keenum will either be inactive or the No. 2 quarterback Sunday based on how he progresses in the protocol.

Keenum suffered the concussion in the Rams' Week 11 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, but controversy clouded the finish of Baltimore's last-second win after St. Louis and appointed spotters failed to identify the ailment and pull him from the game.

Fisher named Keenum the team's starter in advance of Week 11 after Foles underwhelmed during his first stint in blue and gold. Now the team's big offseason acquisition has been afforded a shot at redemption after throwing seven touchdowns and nine interceptions through 10 games.

"I feel good," Foles said following the Ram's Week 10 loss to the Chicago Bears, per Wagoner. "Rhythm, I feel good dropping back, throwing, reading defenses, I feel good about it. But I have got to continue to play better. Part of being a quarterback is making the guys around you play better, I understand. We, as an offense, just have to keep improving."

The task ahead isn't easy. The Cardinals rank 10th in passing yards allowed (235.3 per game) and second in interceptions (15). Conversely, St. Louis ranks last in total passing yards (1,990) and is tied for last in touchdown passes (8) with the Minnesota Vikings

As the Cardinals seek to rattle off a sixth straight win, it wouldn't be a surprise to see head coach Bruce Arians' defense hone in on shutting down Todd Gurley and the Rams' running game in an attempt to try to make Foles beat them through the air.

But if there's a silver lining for Foles, it's that he tossed three touchdowns in Week 4 to help the Rams defeat the Cardinals, 24-22, in Glendale, Arizona. A repeat performance would be a stunner based on the teams' current trajectories, but St. Louis has playmakers in Gurley and Tavon Austin capable of shaking things up.
