Barcelona vs. Villanovense: Winners and Losers from Copa Del Rey

Michael CummingsDec 2, 2015

Barcelona moved into the last 16 of the Copa del Rey following an easy 6-1 victory over Villanovense on Wednesday night at the Camp Nou.

The first leg ended 0-0 in October, but Barca had little trouble seeing off the third-tier side in the return leg. Dani Alves opened the scoring in the fourth minute, and Sandro Ramirez hit a hat-trick for the hosts. Munir El Haddadi added a pair of goals for Barca, while Juanfran netted a consolation for the visitors.

Here, Bleacher Report selects winners and losers from the match.

Winner: Dani Alves

Barcelona right-back Dani Alves broke the deadlock with a wicked, dipping shot in the fourth minute. Holding possession about 30 yards from goal, Alves' swerving strike fooled Villanovense goalkeeper Jose Fuentes and ended up in the back of the net.

It was exactly what Barcelona needed. After drawing the first leg 0-0 back in October, Barca surely wanted an early goal to settle any possible nerves in front of their home fans.

With his aggressive approach in the early stages, Alves gave Barcelona the perfect start. As an added bonus, he became the first Barca player to score from outside the box this season at the Camp Nou, per Opta Jose.

Loser: Jose Fuentes

It almost feels unfair to fault Jose Fuentes for anything in this game. Villanovense were thoroughly outmatched, and their goalkeeper was always going to have a tough time against a side like Barcelona—even with reserves playing.

But Fuentes made a pair of mistakes that led to Barcelona's first two goals.

As noted in the previous slide, Dani Alves' fourth-minute goal came on a dipping, swerving strike. Saving it was always going to be tricky, but a professional goalkeeper really ought to have kept it out. Instead, Fuentes could only put a hand to the ball as it flew into the net.

The second mistake was worse. In the 21st minute, Fuentes misplaced a pass straight to Sandro Ramirez. Not surprisingly, the Barcelona man punished the gaffe with a quick, curled finish.

With such a gulf in class between the two teams, Barcelona didn't need any help winning this match. Fuentes gave them more than enough.

Winner: Sandro Ramirez

Sandro Ramirez hit a hat-trick, showing manager Luis Enrique that he's another good striking option off the bench.

In the 21st minute, Sandro took advantage of a mistake by the goalkeeper to curl in a picturesque shot for Barcelona's second goal. He scored again 10 minutes later, finishing expertly from an Aitor pass after making a clever run into the box.

On both chances, Sandro was ruthless. He benefited from poor goalkeeping on the first, but the second was simply good attacking play.

The 20-year-old then completed his hat-trick in the 69th minute, thumping in from close range after Villanovense couldn't clear their box.

Because of the talent on Barcelona's books, the reality for Sandro is that matches like this are his best chance to shine. Barring an injury, he won't displace any of Barca's front three any time soon.

But this three-goal haul should give the youngster confidence to keep plugging away.

Who would have thought? It was already a surprise that Villanovense held Barcelona to a scoreless draw in the first leg of this tie in October. But on Wednesday night, the third-tier side managed to score a goal at the Camp Nou.

And what a goal it was.

In the 29th minute, Juanfran Guarnido accepted a pass outside the box with his back to goal. He turned and, sensing an opening, blasted a shot into the top corner from 25 yards.

It was a brilliant strike, and Jordi Masip had no chance to save.

Villanovense were never going to win at the Camp Nou, but scoring a goal at the famous old stadium was quite an achievement for the visitors.

What more could you ask for, besides a clean sheet?

Barcelona won the game easily, moving into the last 16 of the Copa del Rey with a minimum of fuss. Even more importantly, they did so without having to play several key regulars.

Lionel Messi was not selected, while Neymar, Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta remained on the bench. With the win, Barca moved one step closer to another piece of silverware, but now Luis Enrique and his men can return their attention to La Liga.
