Michigan Football: The 5 Best Moments for the Wolverines from 'The Game'
"The Game" will always bring Michigan football lasting memories, but five moments in particular stand out for the Wolverines.
Although Ohio State has dominated recent matchups, Michigan leads the all-time series, holds the largest victory and owns the longest winning streak.
To be clear, the list is not a ranking of the five best games that favored the Wolverines. Significance of the result, legendary plays and promises each factored into the compilation.
Nevertheless, with 111 meetings in series history, there are certainly other moments deserving of inclusion. Head to the comments section and add your thoughts there.
5. The Blowout
1 of 5
Way back in 1902 under Fielding Yost, Michigan ripped off what would be the second of four straight undefeated seasons. Ohio State struggled a bit in the matchup that year.
The Wolverines romped their way to an 86-0 victory, which still stands as the largest margin of victory in the series. Plus, the win was a part of Michigan's 13-0-2 beginning against the Buckeyes.
Insanely enough, the 86-point blowout wasn't the biggest win that season. Michigan also beat what is now Michigan State 119-0, Iowa 107-0 and Albion 88-0.
Yost's team went on to claim a national championship.
4. Jim Harbaugh's Guarantee

Prior to the College Football Playoff and Bowl Championship Series, the optimal significance of "The Game" meant the Big Ten title and an appearance in the Rose Bowl were up for grabs.
Such was the case in 1986, when some fella named Jim Harbaugh played quarterback for the Maize and Blue. Seventh-ranked Ohio State was set to host No. 6 Michigan, yet Harbaugh guaranteed a win.
"I think we're smart enough to know that there's too much at stake right now," Harbaugh said, per ESPN. "Everything's still out there for us. We can still win the Big Ten Championship, we can go to the Rose Bowl, and we will. I guarantee you we'll beat Ohio State and be in Pasadena."
Harbaugh and Co. ultimately earned a 26-24 win and booked a trip to the Rose Bowl.
3. Michigan Beats Ohio State, Then Wins National Title

In 1997, top-ranked Michigan needed one final victory to seal the conference title and compete for the national crown. Ohio State stood in the way.
Charles Woodson helped clear the fourth-ranked obstacle, recording a 37-yard reception, 78-yard punt return touchdown and an interception in the end zone during the 20-14 win.
Woodson ultimately received the Heisman Trophy. However, the Wolverines weren't done there.
Michigan knocked off No. 8 Washington State in the Rose Bowl and grabbed a share of the national title, which is the program's most recent championship.
2. Desmond Howard Strikes the Pose
4 of 5The game itself wasn't overly competitive, but Desmond Howard brought one of the most iconic moments in the college football history during the 1991 matchup.
Fourth-ranked Michigan stomped No. 18 Ohio State 31-3, and the explosive receiver returned a punt 93 yards to cap the beatdown—and his Heisman Trophy-winning campaign.
Just for good measure, though, he struck the Heisman pose.
Howard tallied 62 receptions for 985 yards and 19 touchdowns on the season, adding 180 rushing yards and two scores, 412 punt return yards and that touchdown as well as a kickoff return score, too.
1. Bo Schembechler Era Begins in Style
5 of 5
After nearly two decades of mediocre football and a 12-5 Ohio State advantage in the series, Bo Schembechler introduced himself in a big way.
In 1969, Schembechler's debut season, No. 1 Ohio State had a Big Ten title and shot at the national championship on the line.
Michigan spoiled that party, toppling the Buckeyes 24-12. Barry Pierson snatched three interceptions and almost returned a punt for a touchdown.
Perhaps most importantly, it was the first showdown in a stretch of 11 ranked-vs.-ranked meetings over a 12-year span that sent to the winner to Pasadena, California.
