Despite Miraculous Week 10 Win, Jaguars Have Improvements to Make

Evan ReierNov 15, 2015

The Jacksonville Jaguars improved to 3-6 after one of the most unbelievable finishes in recent NFL history. Baltimore Ravens defensive end Elvis Dumervil's facemask penalty gave the Jaguars a chance at a 53-yard attempt to win the game, and kicker Jason Myers knocked it down with no time left.

It was simply a miracle. For that to happen and become an important road win for this team is unfathomable. This Jaguars win not only keeps the chance for an AFC South title charge alive, but as a very real possibility.

But it doesn't excuse a lot of poor play from the Jaguars on Sunday, especially on the offensive side of the ball. The defense was gashed on various occasions, but they also forced three turnovers and gave the offense numerous chances to win this game by a decent margin.

And then there were the special teams errors. Most notably was Myers' 26-yard miss, which is apparently possible for an NFL kicker, and the punts from Bryan Anger and the unit's coverage continued to falter at times.

Obviously, the Jaguars did have positives, as well, especially in wide receivers Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns each bringing down their seventh touchdowns of the season. They continue their incredible campaigns, as seen below.

Hurns Season Totals (Week 10)41 (5)697 (62)7 (1)17 (12.4)
Robinson Season Totals (Week 10)45 (5)758 (51)7 (1)16.8 (10.2)

The four turnovers from the Ravens weren't properly capitalized upon, but the defense does deserve credit for forcing three of those. Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco had absolutely decimated the secondary, but cornerback Davon House and defensive tackle Abry Jones stepped up to make big plays.

The absence of forced turnovers this season has been a concern, but the Jaguars have won two of their past three, and in those two wins, they've forced four turnovers each time. The connection is obvious, and continuing to make big plays on defense may be a deciding factor down the stretch.

House has been exceptional this season, and this was certainly the day where he was statistically rewarded for consistent and impressive play. Two interceptions, four passes defended and eight combined tackles made for an explosive day.

It was expected that House would come in and be a big help, but no one could have anticipated his season thus far. Going forward, the Jaguars can now expect some explosive moments mixed in with shutdown coverage.

While Robinson and Hurns ended up scoring the two touchdowns for the Jaguars offense, quarterback Blake Bortles was the one throwing to them. Not turning over the ball late was a step in the right direction, but his overall play was not.

Completing less than 50 percent of his passes, as seen below, is pretty much unacceptable, and it appeared that he and the entire offense was off on Sunday. While Week 9 saw one of his most productive performances, Sunday's game saw struggle and inaccuracy.

There's no doubt that Bortles is crucial to this offense's success, and when he plays well this offense looks like one of the best in the NFL. But on Sunday they were scarily bad, and he has to find consistency to continue pushing for the playoffs this season.

Week 10 had a bit of everything, including an extremely valuable win. While it's easy to say the Jaguars got lucky, or that they possibly didn't deserve this win, the fact of the matter is that this team has been dealt its fair share of bad luck.

The struggles of this season rest on the shoulders of the players and coaches, but luck has played a factor both ways. Now that something has fallen the Jaguars way, especially on the road, this team may finally be ready to turn the corner.
