Biggest Winners and Losers in World Rugby for Weekend of November 21-22

Tom SunderlandNov 22, 2015

England's representatives enjoyed a triumphant return to European competition this weekend as the Champions Cup reclaimed centre stage.

All six Premiership clubs prevailed over continental opponents, and the second week of the 2015-16 Champions Cup season comes to an end with English outfits at the summit in four of the five pools.

There was also big news on the international stage as Eddie Jones officially took to the England helm as Stuart Lancaster's successor, but Tonga's national team was struck by more unfortunate news.

Read on for a breakdown of the biggest winners and losers in world rugby this weekend.

Winner: High-Flying Wasps

1 of 5

Wasps' entertaining start to the 2015-16 campaign continued with a 32-6 throttling of Champions Cup title-holders Toulon on Sunday, where a Nathan Hughes brace led Dai Young's team to a bonus-point triumph.

It will be remembered as one of the greatest nights in the club's recent European history, where Ruaridh Jackson and Frank Halai were also among the try-scorers to keep Wasps at the top of Pool 5.

BT Sport presenter Nick Mullins noted that although Toulon could call upon a stronger XV, Wasps have every reason to be proud of what was another morale-boosting result in their rise.

Loser: Troubled Tonga

2 of 5

Tonga's Rugby Union will elect a new chairman and president after it was reported Epi Taione quit the roles due to frustrations with the funding his federation receives from World Rugby.

Taione spoke to New Zealand broadcaster ONE News this week, where he opened up on his decision to step down from the position amid concerns with how funding was distributed (h/t ESPN Scrum):

"

We got given £250,000 preparation funding and others got given £7.5m. It's not a level playing field, it's completely unfair and it's bloody pathetic to be honest.

All this talking about the money they made in the last World Cup, we don't see any of that and it's just how they run the things, it's just killing rugby.

"

Pacific Island nations Samoa and Fiji have also been through controversies in recent years relating to funds and their ability to compete with the better-equipped big guns of international rugby.

One might debate how Taione is hoping to improve the situation by stepping away from the alleged problem, but Tonga now face a fight to resolve the status quo following this unsettling development.

Winner: Premiership Powerhouses

3 of 5

Six Premiership teams were in Champions Cup action this weekend and all six emerged with wins to their name, while counterparts from Ireland, Wales and Italy struggled slightly in their latest outings.

Wasps demolished title-holders Toulon at the Ricoh Arena, Bath defeated 2012 champions Leinster at The Rec and Northampton Saints clinched a valuable away victory at Glasgow Warriors.

Exeter Chiefs are the only English team in the competition who currently don't sit atop their pool, although Ospreys are only a point above Rob Baxter's men in Pool 2.

Following the domination from Top 14 teams last season, early signs suggest England's bastions are in fine stead to launch a more competitive bid for this term's crown.

Loser: Chris Robshaw

4 of 5

It's been reported Harlequins flanker Chris Robshaw is to be relieved of his duties as England captain by new head coach Jones, who was appointed Red Rose helmsman last Friday.

ITV confirmed the former Japan coach will meet with Robshaw to discuss where the team go from here, and it's possible the back-rower's place in England's starting XV is no longer assured:

"

The first thing with a captain is that he has to be one of the first players selected.

You've got to know the guy is going to be in the team. Secondly, whatever values we've got in the team such as hard work, they've got to live those values.

Every time a player looks at the captain they know the values that are important for the team are being shown by him and that he's leading the way.

Those stories about Richie McCaw are true. In training they go from one drill to the next and he sprints there, he's the first there. He cleans the changing room after the game and that's the sort of guy you want.

But it's not just one guy, you need a group of players around him to support him.

I'm sure those players are in England, we just have to find them. Leadership is something you have to develop.

"

Just who it is we'll see succeed Robshaw with the armband is out for debate should he indeed be relieved of his leader role, but the Quins figurehead looks to be first in line to suffer from England's shakeup.

Winner: David Strettle

5 of 5

Clermont finally made a delayed start to the Champions Cup campaign on Sunday with a 34-29 victory over Ospreys, where David Strettle enjoyed a two-try display and was in flying form for the French giants.

Paul Williams of Rugby World hailed the former Saracens man as "superb" for his performance at Marcel Michelin, where a couple of wonderful weaving runs resulted in two similarly terrific scores.

Life in France is going swimmingly for the winger, who made 120 metres from just seven carries and beat eight defenders, dazzling as one of this weekend's best performers.
