Robert Lewandowski and Arjen Robben Rift Reported at Bayern Munich

Christopher SimpsonNov 11, 2015

A rift between Bayern Munich stars Robert Lewandowski and Arjen Robben is reportedly developing after the latter's return to the team following a spell out with injury—one that could have serious repercussions for their season.

According to Bild (via Alex Richards of the Irish Mirror), the pair are at loggerheads as the Polish striker is unhappy with the Dutch winger's selfishness in front of goal, and German outlet Bild "reports the pair do not talk off the pitch."

Per Richards, speaking after their 4-0 win over Stuttgart, in which Robben scored but Lewandowski didn't, the latter said: "I don’t want to say anything. You have seen it already for yourself."

As for Robben, he said: "There were a few situations in the first half where he could have passed the ball too."

As Richards notes, while Robben was injured, the unselfish Douglas Costa and Kingsley Coman focused on supplying ammo for their in-form front man. However, the Dutchman is far more direct and prefers his trademark move of driving forward, cutting inside and shooting on goal.

Indeed, Richards shares a remarkable stat—Lewandowski averages a goal every 58 minutes when Robben is out of the side but just once every 125 minutes with him present.

The Pole has been in stunning form this season, as Squawka Football demonstrates:

Bayern would be wise to continue taking advantage of their prolific striker while he's firing on all cylinders, but manager Pep Guardiola concedes he's unable to change Robben's singular approach. Per Richards, he said:

"That’s Arjen Robben. I am a good coach, but not good enough to change the mentality of a 31-year-old Robben."

Nevertheless, Bundesliga expert Clark Whitney believes the team are evolving and no longer rely almost solely on Robben for success:

Bayern have been majestic on all fronts this season and have taken a staggering 34 points from a possible 36 in the Bundesliga, scoring 37 goals in their 12 matches while conceding just four.

However, Borussia Dortmund have also been incredible and find themselves just five points behind, having won nine of their matches and scored 35 times. Their total of 29 points would see them top of the table in the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga, albeit Barcelona have played one game fewer.

While Bayern are still the deserved favourites for the title, BVB's form shows just why it's imperative for Guardiola's side to maintain their push, and a possible rift between two of their most important players could well disrupt their phenomenal start to the campaign.

As Guardiola realises, convincing Robben to alter a style that has been so successful for him is a difficult task.

Likewise, Bayern would be remiss if they failed to capitalise on Lewandowski while he's in such strong form, so the Spaniard faces a big challenge in keeping both players happy and firing on all cylinders.

If he can't resolve the situation, clubs like Dortmund and Barca will be waiting to take full advantage domestically and in the Champions League.
