NC State Announces 6-Year Contract Extension with Adidas

Mike ChiariNov 10, 2015

North Carolina State University and Adidas extended their deal Tuesday, which ensures Wolfpack athletes will be adorned in Adidas gear for an additional six years.

According to a press release from NC State athletics (h/t Scout.com), the new six-year deal will run from July 2016 through June 2022. Athletic director Debbie Yow believes the partnership is a major coup for the university:

"

We are pleased and appreciative that our enhanced partnership with Adidas will allow us to better provide for our 550 student-athletes participating in 23 varsity sports. That is our most important goal, and we will now have additional resources to meet those needs, as well as provide additional value to campus for support of student activities and scholarships.

NC State also announced the extension guarantees at least $6.45 million per year in retail value and financial considerations, which is up considerably from the $3 million figure guaranteed under the previous deal. Per NC State, that makes the agreement among the most lucrative in the nation.

The NC State football team is currently 6-3, and the men's basketball team is coming off of a run to the Sweet 16, which is a feat it has accomplished twice since 2012.

Although it has been quite some time since NC State athletics were a dominant force, they appear to be on the rise, which makes the new deal a wise investment from Adidas' perspective.

Many of the top athletic programs in the nation are attached to hot brands like Nike and Under Armour, but if Adidas can catch lightning in a bottle with NC State, then it has an opportunity to make some significant gains.
