Sunday Recap
Fordham raced to a 4-0 lead in his match as Jones repeatedly missed key doubles, including two at double-18. Indeed, after three legs, Jones had missed a staggering eight darts at doubles.
The local hero came back in resurgent fashion though, finishing on 64 before landing a double-16 finish and tops as well as his first 180 to take three consecutive legs.
It looked to be heading to a decisive ninth leg, but the Viking held his nerve in the face of Jones' stunning comeback attempt to take a 106 checkout and seal the memorable victory. As Live Darts noted, Jones' lack of a clinical edge proved his undoing:
Fordham showed incredible relief at seeing out the win, per PDC Darts:
There were no such comeback attempts from Huybrechts when he took on Van Gerwen.
A double-16 and an 87 checkout gave the Dutchman a 2-0 lead in the match, before a 180 helped Huybrechts pull a leg back in just 11 darts. An astonishing fourth leg saw three 180s thrown—two by Van Gerwen, who finished on 76 to restore his two-leg lead.
Another 180 helped the 26-year-old move to within one leg of victory before taking a 130 checkout on the bullseye to win the match:
Elsewhere, Dave Chisnall bagged a stunning nine-dart finish as he beat Peter Wright. PDC Darts captured the moment:
Live Darts shared its significance:
In the afternoon session, Green looked like he would be able to live with Taylor initially, as he held his first two throws, including an 81 checkout on bull's-eye.
The Power began with intent, though, taking out 83 in the 14-dart opening leg before claiming his second leg in just darts, finishing spectacularly from 125.
Green was able to punish a rare moment of loose throwing from Taylor to hold his second leg and level the scores at 2-2, but from there, the 41-year-old was barely given a look-in, as the 16-time world champion ruthlessly took the next three in a row.
Sky Sports' Laure James believes Taylor looks hungry for success right now:
Indeed, his post-match comments seemed to indicate as much, per Live Darts:
Taylor admitted he would not be "resting on his laurels," according to PDC Darts:
Van Barneveld began well against Anderson with a break in the opening leg courtesy of three 140s, but the Scot responded well by breaking back immediately and holding to take a 2-1 lead.
Barney levelled the score before the world champion finished on a bull's-eye from 86. The Dutchman once again equalised but crucially missed a double-15 finish in the next to allow Anderson a 4-3 lead, and the 44-year-old ruthlessly took the decider.
According to Live Darts, Barney hit four 180s and averaged 106, but as he admitted afterward, it was not enough:
Live Darts also confirmed what the result meant:
Anderson is in strong form and will be the player to beat in the last 16.
As for Barney, if he can replicate his performance against Anderson when he takes on Butler, he should be able to progress via the shootout.
