Diego Costa Recalled to Spain Squad for England and Belgium Friendlies

Rory MarsdenNov 6, 2015

Chelsea striker Diego Costa has been recalled to the Spain squad for La Roja's upcoming friendlies after being omitted for the final round of Euro 2016 qualifiers in October.

The Spanish national team's Twitter feed provided Vicente del Bosque's full squad for the November clashes with England and Belgium:

Del Bosque left Costa, 27, out of his previous squad following the forward's "unedifying" antics in a Premier League match against Arsenal, per the Mirror's Ed Malyon.

However, he has reinstated the Brazil-born player despite Costa's recent struggles in front of goal with Chelsea.

The entire Blues squad has been struggling this season, and Costa has only managed to find the net twice in nine Premier League appearances, most recently against Aston Villa last month, per WhoScored.

Per European football writer Karl Matchett, Costa arguably does not deserve to start for Spain given the numerous forward options Del Bosque has at his disposal:

Costa's Chelsea teammate, Cesc Fabregas, is also included in the Spain squad despite his noticeable drop in form recently.

There is still no place for Manchester United's Ander Herrera, something of an injustice, according the Manchester Evening News' Samuel Luckhurst:

With Spain having confirmed their spot at next year's European Championship, they now face a string of friendlies as they prepare to make a tilt at a third consecutive title.

Belgium, the newly installed top team in the world, per FIFA, will offer a significant challenge for Del Bosque's team having lost just one of their last 13 matches.

England are in similarly good form having been the only nation to win all 10 of their Euro qualifiers, and Del Bosque believes they have a decent chance of triumphing in France, per Spanish football writer Dermot Corrigan: "England qualified really well, quick players, powerful in midfield & back. They're candidate to win Euros. England are an extraordinary team, if they come together they are a real contender for Euros."

Spain's clash with England takes place on Friday, Nov. 13, with their match against Belgium following on Tuesday, Nov. 17.
