Phil Mickelson Parts Ways with Coach Butch Harmon: Latest Details and Reaction

Alec NathanNov 4, 2015

It's been more than two years since Phil Mickelson logged his last PGA Tour win, and Lefty is taking a big step toward rectifying that problem.

According to Golf.com's Alan Bastable, Mickelson has ended his working relationship with swing coach Butch Harmon after joining forces in 2007.

"I've learned a great deal from him in our eight years together," Mickelson said in a statement, per Bastable. "It’s just that at the moment I need to hear new ideas from a different perspective."

However, there's hardly any ill will between the two, as Harmon's statement to Golf.com indicated: "I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with Phil and we’ve had great success together. Helping him win The Open Championship in 2013 was one of the pinnacles of my career. I see nothing wrong with him seeking advice from another source. We’re great friends and always will be."

Mickelson made the cut at every 2015 major, but his calendar-year performance left plenty to be desired. Despite logging a second-place finish at the Masters Tournament, that was the lone top-10 finish he notched on the major stage.

For the year, Mickelson recorded three top-10 finishes while missing three cuts—including back-to-back early exits at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and Farmers Insurance Open at the start of the campaign.

Those struggles came on the heels of a down 2014, when the 2013 Open Championship winner missed cuts at the Masters, The Players Championship and The Honda Classic.

This past season also saw Mickelson regress statistically. According to PGATour.com, the five-time major winner finished the season ranked 161st in driving accuracy percentage (55.98 percent), 65th in strokes gained tee-to-green (.242) and 177th in greens in regulation (61.51 percent).

Underwhelming efforts aside, the world's 25th-ranked player has time to make a comeback. At 45 years old, Mickelson is still capable of competing with young studs like Jordan Spieth (age 22), Rory McIlroy (age 26) and Jason Day (age 27), and his impressive track record proves as much.

His prime may be over, but Mickelson has enough gas left in the tank to compete on a major stage next year and beyond.
