Liverpool Transfer News: Marco Reus 'Seems Like a Good Idea,' Admits Ian Ayre

Rory MarsdenNov 4, 2015

Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre has revealed the Reds are listening to the fans when they suggest signings such as Borussia Dortmund playmaker Marco Reus.

The German international has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield, especially since former Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp took over the managerial role at Liverpool from Brendan Rodgers, per Spanish outlet Fichajes.net (via the Mirror's Liam Corless).

Fans have widely backed the potential move on social media and Ayre has encouraged Reds supporters to continue their dialogue with the club while endorsing a potential move for Reus, per the Liverpool Echo's Ian Doyle:

"

It seems like a good idea [to sign Reus]. (But) If we did everything that was said on social media, we wouldn’t get any work done. It’s about using it as a barometer, it’s a good tool to get a sense of what the feeling is out there. You’ve got very different and diverse people out there, the people who come to the games are slightly different to the millions of people who watch on TV.

"

The 26-year old Reus has been in flying form under new Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel this season, netting seven times in the Bundesliga, per WhoScored.com.

Opta heaped praise on him for his recent performances in the German top flight:

Dortmund would be loath to let him go as he is arguably the key attacking presence in their side.

While playing under Klopp back in February, Reus extended his deal at Signal Iduna Park up to 2019 and he is now reportedly valued by the club at £60 million, per ESPN FC's Miguel Delaney.

Liverpool have shown in recent times that they are prepared to spend big—Christian Benteke was brought in for £32.5 million in the summer—but such an astronomical figure may be a step too far.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 09: Jurgen Klopp at Anfield is unveiled as the new manager of Liverpool FC as he stands alongside Tom Werner (l) the chairman and Ian Ayre (r) the chief executive during a photocall at Anfield on October 9, 2015 in Liverpool,

Klopp earned his first Premier League win on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over defending champions Chelsea.

Philippe Coutinho and Benteke netted the goals but—having lost Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling in recent transfer windows—Liverpool lack depth and creativity in attacking areas.

The addition of Reus would go a long way to solving that problem. However, Klopp has recently insisted that he will not raid his former club for signings, per German outlet Bild (via the Mirror's Aaron Flanagan).

Ayre revealed that Klopp has the final say on signings and does not need the approval of a transfer committee, per MailOnline's Simon Jones:

"

Brendan had the final say on all the players we signed. There's only one person that has the final say over what players at Liverpool Football Club and that's Jurgen Klopp right now. That's always been the case for as long as I've been here The words 'transfer committee' I think got used once and became this idea that we all sit round a table and have a vote on every player we sign. That couldn't be further from the truth.

"

The German manager will undoubtedly want to add some new blood in the upcoming transfer windows and Liverpool's hierarchy may support a move for Reus.

However, given how much Reus would likely cost to sign up, Liverpool and Klopp will have to be sure that he is worth the money.
