Gladbach vs. Juventus: Winners and Losers from Champions League

Adam DigbyNov 3, 2015

Buoyed by a derby victory over local rivals Torino, Juventus headed to Germany and a meeting with Borussia Monchengladbach, coming away with a 1-1 draw after another difficult 90-minute outing.

The club had frustrated the Bianconeri in their last meeting, holding them to a disappointing 0-0 draw at the Juventus Stadium that prevented the home side from opening up a commanding lead at the top of Group D.

Gladbach had won six consecutive domestic matches following the appointment of Andre Schubert, and the interim coach spoke of continuing that at Borussia Park during his pre-match press conference.

“Juventus are a very good side who have been very successful in recent years, but recent years have nothing to do with the here and now,” Schubert told reporters, per the official UEFA website.

“We are not bad ourselves and want to pose problems. We have a plan to cope with Juve's tactical flexibility, tomorrow we will see if it is a good plan.”

It would prove to be just that, and what follows is a look at the winners and losers from this encounter, picking out the best and worst performances.

Winner: Fabian Johnson (Gladbach)

1 of 4

The game was just 18 minutes old when the hosts were gifted an opening goal after an error from Giorgio Chiellini.

The Juventus defender inexplicably passed the ball to Raffael rather than clear it, and the Brazilian in turn found Fabian Johnson.

The United States international would punish the Bianconeri, drilling a precise shot across goal, beating Gigi Buffon with ease.

Loser: Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus)

2 of 4

Having sat out the Turin derby, Giorgio Chiellini would return to the Juventus lineup only to make another grave error.

His red card against Sassuolo last week arguably cost the Bianconeri three points, and he would make another expensive mistake here.

A woeful touch just as Gladbach broke forward eventually led to the German club taking the lead, putting Juventus under even greater pressure.

Winner: Stephan Lichtsteiner (Juventus)

3 of 4

Seeing Stephan Lichtsteiner return to the starting XI was a major boost for Juventus, the full-back returning after a month on the sidelines following cardiac surgery.

He would mark his return in some style, smashing home Paul Pogba's cross to equalise just before half-time.

The goal capped a solid outing from the Switzerland international, who was as reliable as ever in defence.

Loser: Hernanes (Juventus)

4 of 4

It was perhaps somewhat surprising that Hernanes started this encounter, particularly in place of Juan Cuadrado's match-winning performance against Torino.

Yet if the opening 45 minutes failed to support that decision by Massimiliano Allegri, the second half would compound the feeling the Juventus coach had made a mistake.

Just seven minutes after the restart, Hernanes would be given a red card for a two-footed challenge on Alvaro Dominguez.
