The Funniest Sports Mockumentaries

Nick DimengoNov 4, 2015

While most sports fans love the drama and storytelling aspect of documentaries that have been popping up over the past few years, something that have gotten my attention are the abundance of mockumentaries that have found their way onto the Internet, too.

Not to take away from those who put together the real 30 for 30s, but, if these fake documentaries were actually done, they would be just as brilliant.

Since not all are created equally, here are the best sports mockumentaries that have ever been done—and we can only hope live on forever.

The One About the LSU T-Rex Guy

1 of 10

When sports happen, there's little one can do one emotion takes hold of them.

Whether that's hopping up and down like a maniac and hugging complete strangers, crying over a win or loss or, doing what LSU Tigers fan Caleb Bates did and act like a T-Rex, some things just can't be explained.

That's why a 30 for 30 parody on Caleb would be epic, with the dance described in detail—as well as the attention he received in taking over the Internet.

The One About LeBron James' Headband

2 of 10

The Cleveland Cavaliers' LeBron James has been ragged on for having his receding hairline for years, with the headband he often wore continuing to move further back atop his head.

After James decided to lose the accessory last season so that he could, "look more like his teammates," the Cavs released a spoof video about the thing that was actually pretty funny.

Let's be honest, though, the guy is a freak of nature who humiliates opposition at will, so I'm not so sure wearing a headband or not is the main difference maker—although hearing the headband's story would be cool.

The One About Richard Sherman

3 of 10

There are few guys on the planet who can impersonate as many people as comedian Frank Caliendo, who has routinely busted out his act over the years.

One of his best bits was when he tackled the Richard Sherman postage rant following the 2014 NFC Championship Game, when Sherman verbally attacked the San Francisco 49ers' Michael Crabtree on live TV.

With Caliendo providing a number of different characters—from Mel Kiper Jr. to a mumbling Bill Belichick—if this were real, it would have been awesome.

The One About Rex Ryan's Foot Fetish

4 of 10

Ever since news broke that former New York Jets and current Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan had more than just a small foot fetish, sports fans have used the information against him to poke fun at the guy—until he and his pinky toe ran all the way home.

Ryan, who is one of those guys in sports you either love or love to hate, even showed off his affection for feet by having a picture of his wife's on his Bills desk this summer—no doubt trolling those who mocked him.

Never one to shy away from attention, Rex Ryan's love affair for feet should absolutely be a 30 for 30, allowing fans to understand why he adores these stinky things so much—and this fake documentary could help set the script.

The One About Gordon Bombay

5 of 10

We all know the magic that fictional head coach Gordon Bombay had over a youth hockey league, so who wouldn't want to see an in-depth documentary about the legendary Minnesota Miracle Man?

Bombay, who helped turn a ratty and bratty group of untalented kids into the Mighty Ducks and Team USA at the Junior Goodwill Games in The Mighty Ducks films, went from hotshot attorney to superstar—and this mockumentary played that up perfectly.

Where did the motivation for Bombay come from? How did he have the guile to stand up to Coach Reilly and get Adam Banks from the Hawks to the Ducks? This film would tell it all.

The One About the Marathon Runner Who Didn't Brag About Running a Marathon

6 of 10

Look, as someone who uses social media in both his professional and personal life, I can't sit here and say that I haven't been one of those people who tosses up pictures and some inspirational message following me running a full- or half-marathon.

As many of you have noticed, if someone runs one, they're showing it on Facebook by posting something about it a lot!

This fake documentary pokes fun at that, though, with it talking about how one brave marathon runner completed a race and didn't actually say a word about completing it.

Giving this exclusive insight, the runner—named Kim Novelle—had these words to say in this fake film, "Why would I have talked about something that's not interesting to anyone else?"

Massive burn.

The Day Bill Belichick Coached the New York Jets

7 of 10

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is best-known for winning four Super Bowls in six tries with the team during his 16 seasons at the helm, but some might remember a day that isn't often spoken about.

That would be 24 hours that Belichick was the head coach of the New York Jets.

Resigning on a napkin—yes, that really happened—the head coach had a change of heart following his introductory press conference, stunning Gang Green to join the Pats a day later.

This mockumentary is one that is hilarious—unless you're a Jets fan.

The Space Jam Game

8 of 10

It's one of the biggest cult classic sports flicks ever, so when Yahoo! Sports released a fake 30 for 30 film about the Space Jam game, it was, arguably, one of the best things sports fans ever saw.

And if you haven't seen it, check it out here.

Breaking down the matchup between the Toon Squad and Monstars, some of the biggest names in basketball discuss how Michael Jordan—the star of the film—had his biggest challenge in leading a group of underdogs against three 12-footers, two with spikes coming out of them.

The film may have given the outcome of the game, but this fake film told the unseen story—and it is amazing.

Angels in the Outfield

9 of 10

While a lot of these 30 for 30 mockumentaries involve underdog stories, there might not be a bigger one than the California Angels from the movie Angels in the Outfield.

One of the greatest sports movies of my childhood, the film is about the epicly improbably turnaround the Angels have following a kid named Roger praying for them to play well.

Telling the story about how the team went from worst-to-first during the '94 season, the commentary, fictional stats and hilarious references to other '90s movies is a definite A+.

Each time I watch this thing, I can't help but wish it were real.

The One About Brian Scalabrine

10 of 10

All of the aforementioned mockumentaries on this list are solid, but the one that trumps them all is the fake film about former NBA baller Brian Scalabrine, who played for three different teams in 11 years and earned a reputation as a blue-collar animal from fans.

Simply called Brian, the fake movie talks about how Scal was more than just the human victory cigar, with this YouTube video, arguably, being his lasting legacy.

Scalabrine may have won a title, but this "film" has to be something that he's most proud of.
