USMNT Watch: Jordan Morris Enjoying Fine Spell of Form at Stanford

Joe TanseyOct 31, 2015

Most of the conversation surrounding the United States men's national team in recent months has involved a needed influx of new and young players.

One player who fits the latter criteria is heating up at the perfect time as the Yanks look for a boost as a whole at the start of World Cup qualifying. More specifically, Jurgen Klinsmann needs consistency out of his forwards. With so many questions lingering about the strikers in the USMNT talent pool, it might be time to turn to a college phenom once again.

In addition to a breakdown of Jordan Morris' recent form at Stanford, we'll have updates on the rest of the USMNT stars playing across the globe in our latest USMNT Watch.

Jordan Morris in Impressive Form for Stanford

Jordan Morris, who is most known for his goal against Mexico in the most recent Dos A Cero victory in April at the Alamodome, has put together a nice scoring streak for Stanford over the last month.

Morris' current run of form began on October 16 with a game-winning goal in the second half against UCLA. At that point in the season, Morris only had five strikes to his name.

Since returning to the lineup against UCLA, Morris has found the back of the net in four of his last five matches. Morris has scored twice against San Diego State, once versus UCLA and once against Oregon State.

On Monday, Morris scored on his 21st birthday against San Diego State thanks to a beautiful first touch that allowed him to control the ball on the left side of the box:

Morris' recent scoring run, combined with the ineffectiveness of Jozy Altidore and Aron Johannsson's injury, may open the door for the Stanford man to earn playing time against St. Vincent and Trinidad and Tobago in the upcoming November qualifying matches.

Aron Johannsson out for Rest of 2015

Speaking of Johannsson, he will be out until at least the end of the year with a hip injury. Johannsson posted on Twitter and Instagram on Wednesday that his operation was a success.

Not only will the forward miss out on time with the Yanks, he will be absent for a good amount of Werder Bremen's Bundesliga matches, which is a tough situation to face in his first year at the club.

Fabian Johnson, who was sidelined himself earlier this season, contributed an assist in Borussia Monchengladbach's 4-1 win over Hertha Berlin. John Brooks did not feature for the losing side.

Alfredo Morales was on the bench for Ingolstadt's 1-1 draw with Schalke at the Veltins Arena on Saturday.

Bobby Wood started and played 74 minutes in the 2. Bundesliga for Union Berlin. Wood is one of the front-runners to earn time up top for the USMNT with Johannsson sidelined and Altidore struggling.

Danny Williams Helps Reading Earn Draw in Championship

Danny Williams was one of the few USMNT players in England to play on Saturday. Williams started for Reading in their 1-1 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion at the Madejski Stadium. The draw against the Championship leaders put the Royals in seventh place on 23 points.

Tim Ream started for Fulham in their 4-1 victory over Bristol City. The Cottagers currently sit in 10th place in the Championship table.

Jonathan Spector, Eric Lichaj and Cody Cropper started their respective matches on the bench in England's second tier.

Tim Howard made seven saves in Everton's 6-2 rout over Sunderland. DeAndre Yedlin played 64 minutes for the Black Cats.

Jermaine Jones on the Move

Once the New England Revolution were eliminated from the MLS Cup playoffs on Wednesday, the speculation surrounding Jermaine Jones started to ramp up.

Jones, who joined the club on an 18-month deal last summer, may not return to Major League Soccer because of the high payday he demands.

“Right now, I don’t really look about what happens next year,” Jones told Fox Sports' Kyle McCarthy on Friday. "I’ll go home now, try to relax for a couple of days and then I’ll be focused on the national team."

"I already said that me and my family feel at home here. It’s a nice place. I like the team. I like the club. But soccer and sports, you don’t stay there if you [just] like the people. I don’t know. I have some offers, not only from MLS. We will go into it with the family and then decide.”

Jones is in a precarious situation with the USMNT since he is one of the aging stars on the roster. There is only a small possibility he will be around for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which means the 2016 Copa America Centenario could be his final tournament with the Yanks as Klinsmann tries to introduce new faces to the squad.

News and Notes: Miguel Ibarra Scores For Club Leon

Miguel Ibarra, who has been on the bench for most of his time at Club Leon, scored his first Liga MX goal for the club on Saturday with a brilliant curling effort against Atlas from just outside the left side of the box.

Jonathan Bornstein and Edgar Castillo both earned starts for their respective teams in Liga MX action this weekend.

Desevio Payne made his first appearance for Groningen since March on Saturday as he came off the bench for a 26-minute shift.

Alejandro Bedoya is still out with the illness he suffered from before the CONCACAF Cup loss to Mexico.

Bob Bradley's Stabaek defeated Start 3-2 on Sunday to clinch no worse than third place in the Tippeligaen. The spot in the table will send the Norwegian side into UEFA Europa League qualifying.
