Bayern Munich vs. Cologne: Score and Reaction from 2015 Bundesliga Match

Christopher SimpsonOct 24, 2015

Bayern Munich beat visitors Cologne 4-0 at the Allianz Arena on Saturday to extend their Bundesliga winning streak to 10 matches and claim their 1000th victory in the league.

Arjen Robben made his long-awaited return to action, and the Dutchman opened the scoring after 35 minutes before Arturo Vidal doubled the hosts' advantage five minutes later. In the second half, Robert Lewandowski continued his fine scoring run and Thomas Muller added a penalty.

The hosts were in control from start to finish as Robben shone with an energetic performance as he fizzed around the pitch, creating chances for himself and team-mates alike.

Bayern boss Pep Guardiola began the match with an overwhelmingly attacking formation, per sports journalist Jonas Giaever:

The abundance of attacking talent proved effective, though, as Cologne had little answer for the Bavarians' firepower, and the hosts dominated the first half.

The first clear-cut chance of the match fell to Thomas Muller after Lewandowski flicked the ball on well, but Timo Horn showed great instincts to close the gap on the forward and make the save.

Kingsley Coman and Douglas Costa added real width to Bayern's play as they terrorised the visitors' full-backs, and the former should have done better with a header when he met the latter's excellent delivery from a free-kick.

Just when Cologne looked to have stabilised proceedings, Bayern went ahead.

A ball in from Muller on the right to Lewandowski was well-blocked by a defender but fell kindly for Robben on the edge of the six-yard box, who calmly drifted past Horn to tuck in his 75th Bundesliga goal.

The visitors were dealt another serious blow shortly after when Coman ghosted past Frederik Sorensen and from the byline picked out Vidal on the edge of the penalty area, and the Chilean's first-time side-footed effort flew in with the aid of a deflection.

Bundesliga expert Clark Whitney neatly summarised proceedings, while Squawka Football noted Coman's impressive form:

The second half began in much the same vein as the first with Bayern putting their opponents under some early pressure through a couple of corners, with Robben looking particularly hungry for more goals.

The winger almost set up Lewandowski but some slightly loose control from the striker allowed Horn to gather it, and Robben almost scored himself with a trademark strike shortly after, cutting onto his left foot and aiming a curling effort at the Billy Goats' goal, but Horn was equal to it.

A third was virtually inevitable, though, and sure enough, after 62 minutes, their pressure was rewarded when Lewandowski rose unchallenged to meet Costa's free-kick and glance in his 20th goal in 12 games.

Horn made another strong save to deny the Pole a brace, but he was unable to help when the striker was carelessly pushed by his defenders resulting in a penalty. Muller stepped up to take the spot-kick and tucked it coolly into the bottom-right corner to round out the scoring after 77 minutes.

A quiet end to the game followed with Bayern content to see out the match in comfort with Cologne unable to get near them.

The Bundesliga champions won with consummate ease, and their astounding form shows little sign of abating with the struggling Eintracht Frankfurt their next league opponents.

Further, Robben looked sharp despite only just returning from injury, and the Dutchman's restoration to the starting lineup only makes his side more dangerous, as he proved with an impressive performance.

Post-Match Reaction

Guardiola admitted to his pride at being Bayern's manager after overseeing the milestone win, per the club's official Twitter feed:

According to Opta Franz, the German side reached their millennia of wins after 1,714 matches.
