Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool served up an entertaining Barclays Under-21 Premier League clash on Friday, sharing the spoils in a 1-1 draw.

Matty Virtue scored a spectacular equaliser to cancel out Anton Walkes' early goal, leading to a half-time score of 1-1. The match remained closely contested in the second half but the pace dropped, and with few chances for either side, no more goals were scored.

Here's a look at the latest Under-21 Premier League standings:

Recap

Friday's clash started promisingly but ended in a 1-1 stalemate, a result that doesn't particularly help either team.

Spurs have started the 2015-16 campaign in solid fashion and looked dominant early, with Shayon Harrison narrowly volleying wide of the post after just three minutes.

Five minutes later, hosts Tottenham took the lead. Keanan Bennetts was given far too much space by the Reds' defender and went on a surging run through the centre, before laying the ball off to Walkes for the easy finish.

Spurs' early dominance didn't last, however. Tom Glover was forced into making a fine save to deny Madger Gomes, before an odd scramble near the goal line saw the ball cleared in the nick of time.

Liverpool were pushing for an equaliser and deservedly got one after 32 minutes in spectacular fashion. A bouncing ball landed perfectly for Virtue, who blasted a volley into the top corner and past the helpless Glover.

Andy Kelly of the Liverpool Echo was impressed:

Back on level terms, the battle in midfield intensified, and both teams had some chances to take the lead. But at half-time, the score was still 1-1, and Spurs' official Twitter account was enjoying the action:

The hosts were the better team early in the second half, but despite mustering a handful of chances, they couldn't break the deadlock. Harrison came close after a lovely turn inside the box, but Ryan Fulton read the play and made the save.

On the other side of the pitch, Glover kept his concentration and did well to deny Gomes. That would be the last major chance of the match, as Liverpool were happy to grab a point against an in-form Spurs, and the hosts lacked the firepower to force their way through the defence.

The Under-21 Premier League season will continue with a host of matches on Monday, including the highly anticipated clash between league-leaders Sunderland and Manchester United.

Last year's champions have started the 2015-16 campaign in dreadful form but could get their campaign back on track with a win over the Black Cats, who have already won five matches.

Chelsea and Manchester City will also meet, a strong test for two teams expected to be in the thick of the title chase by the end of the season.
