Rob BlanchetteOct 23, 2015

Two of England's most traditional derby matches take place in the Premier League on Sunday as Manchester United and Manchester City square off at Old Trafford, with Sunderland and Newcastle United also doing battle in the electric Wear-Tyne clash.

United could leapfrog their neighbours by the end of the weekend's fixtures, with City the early pacesetters in the league race.

Jurgen Klopp takes his first Premier League game at Anfield in charge of his new side Liverpool on Sunday, as the Reds host a strong Southampton outfit.

Manchester United vs. Manchester City

Since City became one of the most glamorous clubs on the planet after their Middle East takeover, the Manchester derby now sits with parity alongside United's local rivalry with Liverpool.

Sunday sees United coach Louis van Gaal send out his team against the league leaders, hoping lightning strikes twice, with the Red Devils slaying their neighbours at Old Trafford last season.

United won the fixture 4-2 last season, significantly wrecking City's defence of their Premier League crown, allowing Chelsea to waltz away with the trophy.

Chelsea have fallen away from the pack with an alarming slump this term, allowing United and City to do battle at the summit of the table.

Both teams invested heavily in their squads during the transfer window, with new players Anthony Martial and Kevin De Bruyne early contenders for their clubs' Player of the Year awards.

Martial and De Bruyne have lit up their sides in both the domestic league and Europe, with Oulala Games sharing their vital stats:

De Bruyne spoke ahead of the Sky Blues' trek across Manchester, telling the club's official website City should hold on to their philosophy of attacking football despite being the away side in the derby:

"

We shouldn’t play defensive because our main strength lies going forward, though we need to stay disciplined.

We know it will be difficult. Man United have been a top team for a long time and the rivalry between us and them obviously runs deep, but the season is very long – that said, we know what it means to our supporters and it would be nice if we could go there and get three points.

"

City and United sit behind Arsenal and West Ham in the current form guide, with both Manchester teams suffering two defeats in their last six league outings. City were beaten by the Hammers and Tottenham Hotspur in back-to-back defeats recently, with United also suffering against London opposition, being dismantled by Arsenal at the Emirates in a shocking tactical display.

However, the two Mancunian outfits recovered well in their last Premier League game, with City destroying Bournemouth 5-1 at home and United putting in their best performance of the season, beating Everton 3-0 at Goodison Park.

United and City have both started the campaign in fine fettle, but there is still so much to come from these units in the weeks ahead, with the derby posting an indicator as to who are the real deal and who are the pretenders.

United looked uninspiring in their draw at CSKA Moscow on Wednesday, with their form erratic under LVG at the best of times.

De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling are both in goalscoring form, as is Wilfried Bony—deputising for the perennially injured Sergio Aguero. City have goals in their ranks, but to claim the points at Old Trafford, they might have to take an old adage out of the book of Sir Alex Ferguson, who would always outscore the opposition first before nailing down any kind of defensive masterclass.

The title will not be decided at Old Trafford on Sunday, but a defeat would severely damage the credibility and confidence of the losing team.

Prediction: City win 2-1.

Sunderland vs. Newcastle United

The Black Cats are in a difficult place at present, but the appointment of Sam Allardyce as manager is expected to bring a modicum of stability to proceedings at the Stadium of Light.

The former Newcastle boss has a knack of avoiding the relegation zone, and his industrial tactics are famous when it comes to churning out results week after week.

The Magpies have also endured a horrible start to their campaign but finally found their way back to winning ways in a spectacular 6-2 thrashing of Norwich City at St. James Park.

Georginio Wijnaldum was the hero of the hour, smashing four goals in the game to kickstart the season for manager Steve McClaren.

Bleacher Report UK named the Netherlands international Man of the Weekend for his heroics:

Football presenter Gary Lineker also hailed the Dutchman's efforts:

On form and with momentum, the Magpies are the overwhelming favourites, but the presence of Allardyce makes this a game that is impossible to call.

The spice between the derby outfits always adds a different flavour to the contest, with league positions not important when it comes to this specific battle.

However, on the pitch, Sunderland do not have a player who compares to Wijnaldum, and if the player repeats his recent display, Allardyce will need more than defensive tactics alone to stop his charge.

Prediction: Newcastle win 3-1.
