Dustin Poirier vs. Joe Duffy: A Head-to-Toe Breakdown
UFC Fight Night 76 has a lightweight main event sure to take fans off their feet with excitement. as Ireland's Joe Duffy fights in front of a friendly crowd against Dustin Poirier.
Poirier was a former Top Five-ranked featherweight, but after suffering a TKO loss to Conor McGregor, he made the decision to move up to 155 pounds. Thus far, it has seemed like a good move. He has back-to-back knockout victories over quality opponents.
It has moved Poirier into the Top 15 of the division. Entering the fight, Poirier will be ranked No. 13.
Duffy made his UFC debut at UFC 185 with a win over Jake Lindsey. He returned in July with a submission win against Ivan Jorge. Poirier will be his best test inside the Octagon to date.
So who has the advantage in this fight? That is what we will look at with this head-to-toe breakdown of UFC Fight Night 76's main event.
Striking
1 of 5
If you head over to FightMetric to view the statistical breakdown for this fight, you will note how close these two are in the striking department—although it is worth noting there are only two fights taken into consideration for Duffy's stats.
They are both talented on their feet, and both have knockout power. The difference may be in the variety of attacks.
Poirier has shown more versatility inside the cage. Duffy is also versatile, but he is more measured with his attacks. Poirier will throw more kicks and possibly attempt a flying knee. I would not expect Duffy to be as willing to throw caution to the wind.
I'll give the ever-so-slight nod to Poirier for his willingness to take more chances, although that could also be a flaw against someone like Duffy.
Edge: Poirier
Grappling
2 of 5
Duffy has yet to score a takedown inside the Octagon, and Poirier only has one in his last five fights.
If I were to just discuss this in regard to offensive wrestling, I may lean toward Poirier, but taking into account defense and the clinch, I'll take Duffy.
Poirier is athletic and has good balance, but he has been taken down by some lesser wrestlers inside the cage. Duffy is certainly capable of putting him on his back. However, the scale starts to tip in Duffy's favor due to the inevitable clinch battles.
Duffy should be able to put Poirier against the cage and win those battles more often than not. Duffy's strength and positioning will be difficult for Poirier to overcome and separate from when he is pressured. In a five-round fight, that is what I'll take.
Edge: Duffy
Submissions
3 of 5
Much like striking, I give the nod to Poirier for his variety.
Both men are talented on the ground. After Duffy's debut, new fans were not aware of his talents on the mat, but he got a submission in his second fight. Nine of Duffy's career wins have come via submission. That is more than Poirier.
Poirier only has six in his career, but they are more varied. He has D'Arce choke and mounted triangle armbar finishes to his credit. Duffy is more routine with guillotine and rear-naked chokes. This goes back to Poirier's willingness to take gambles with alternate techniques.
Because of his versatility I like Poirier's chances whether on top or on bottom.

X-Factors
4 of 5
Duffy's X-Factor: Local Energy
Some fighters thrive off fighting in front of their friends and family, and others crumble. Duffy has fought in Ireland plenty of times but never under the UFC banner. Never with the pressure of being the Irish's shining star. That could play large in this fight.
This is a five-round fight, and an adrenaline dump could ultimately cost Duffy the fight. However, feeding off the energy from the fans could turn this into a one-sided beatdown.
Watching how Duffy handles the main event will be very interesting, especially as he moves up the lightweight ladder, as many are interested in a potential future rematch with Conor McGregor.
Poirier's X-Factor: Speed
Poirier doesn't have to make the big cut to 145 pounds anymore, but will that translate into a speed advantage this weekend?
If so, that will give him a big leg up on Duffy. It is going to benefit Poirier's style quite a bit in this matchup, and if he has a notable speed advantage, it will allow him to get loose in a hostile environment quickly. His percentage to win this fight goes up exponentially if he is the quicker man.
Prediction
5 of 5
I do believe Poirier is more versatile on the feet and the ground, but Duffy isn't too far behind. He is far from outclassed in this fight. Giving Poirier the edge is more about splitting hairs than a decisive edge in the fight.
Also, I favor Duffy's chin more than Poirier's, and that could be the ultimate difference, as they'll both land cleanly.
I expect Duffy to control the center of the cage, and he will continually force Poirier to back up. Duffy's angles will cause issues for Poirier, and he will eat a stiff uppercut. On wobbly legs, Poirier will be in a lot of trouble. Duffy follows up with a barrage of strikes to get the finish.
The victory will move Duffy into the Top 15 at lightweight and set up potential contender bouts in 2016 for the UFC's second Irish star.
Prediction: Duffy defeats Poirier by TKO in the second round
