Sunday's clash at Old Trafford is gearing up to be a good one, with both City and United entering the match on the back of solid performances against Bournemouth and Everton, respectively. Both teams put together impressive attacking displays, so fans should be ready for plenty of goals.
The hosts have won four of their last five Premier League encounters, with the lone loss coming at the hands of Arsenal. Nine weeks into the season, United have yet to show they can get a result against one of the league's top teams, and manager Louis van Gaal wants that to change.
Speaking after the 3-0 win over Everton, the Dutchman told reporters his team has to make a statement regarding their title aspirations against City, per the Press Association (for the Daily Mail):
"I am very happy with the response of my players and I am very proud of the performance.
I think it was an excellent performance and maybe it is the start of many, many victories.
We have to be more consistent, so next week when we win against Manchester City then we can say, 'OK, now we think maybe about title aspirations'.
"
City have scored 11 goals in their last two Premier League outings, including a 5-1 trashing of Bournemouth. Raheem Sterling scored a first-half hat-trick, and the team as a whole showed they can be effective in attack without Sergio Aguero and David Silva, who are both nursing injuries.
Sterling stole the headlines, but once again, Kevin De Bruyne was the man pulling the strings in attack. The Belgian has been consistently excellent since moving to the Etihad Stadium, putting up some impressive numbers, via OptaJoe:
Newcastle United and Bournemouth aren't of the same caliber as Manchester United, however, and we'll find out exactly how good this team can be without Aguero on Sunday.
Arsenal's focus has been on the vital Champions League clash with Bayern Munich all week, but Saturday's meeting with Everton shouldn't be overlooked, either. The Toffees have struggled for consistency so far in 2015-16, but on their good days, they've looked capable of hanging with the very best the Premier League has to offer.
Per Mike Taylor of the club's official website, Phil Jagielka made it clear he and his team-mates are focused on future fixtures and not dwelling on the defeat at the hands of United:
"We’ve had a pretty tough run of opening fixtures but with the way the Premier League has gone this season, it’s shown anyone can beat anyone. So we’re not going to be to disheartened. We have some important games coming up - we need to get back to winning ways and keep pushing up that table
"
On paper, Arsenal should walk all over Everton given the impeccable form the Gunners are in, but Tuesday's clash with Bayern will obviously have an impact. The Bavarians are still perfect this season, having won all of their matches, and should they cruise to an easy win at the Emirates on Tuesday, it will be a big blow to Arsenal's mental state.
West Ham have already beaten Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City this season, so Chelsea know they'll have to be at their best when they travel to Upton Park on Saturday. All those wins may have come on the road for the Hammers, but given their superb attacking form, the Blues will have to be cautious, nonetheless.
The hosts have the highest conversion percentage in front of goal in the entire Premier League, per OptaJoe. Manager Jose Mourinho will know every single mistake made on Saturday is likely to be punished.
The Blues hardly impressed in their 2-0 win over Aston Villa, but another three points against the in-form Hammers could be just what the defending champions need to get back on track.
