Does Week Three in College Football Answer More Questions Than It Asks?

Larry BurtonSep 19, 2009

Usually by week three, trends start getting established, leaders step forward, and  questions start getting answered.

Let's examine some questions and answers.

Question one would have to be, is USC really that good? No, they're not. They were just beaten by a really bad team.

How Bad? They lost every game they played last year. To say they were bad is an insult to bad teams. They stank. You can put a spin on it anyway you want, but a No. 3 team is not supposed to get beaten by a win-less team from a year before.

USC, you are like many in the Big Ten, a media darling, but simply a pretender. You just got exposed and now maybe the media will quit talking about you.

This loss brings us to question two, which is, doesn't this mean Ohio State must be even worse than the media thought?

This loss also says volumes about Ohio State. They were actually bragging how close they played USC.

Will they now brag that they lost to a team that got manhandled by Washington?

Ohio State, this loss exposed you as a pretender even more.

Question three that was answered was, will Utah be a BCS argument this year too?

The answer is quite simply no.

After a great year last year and a big win over Alabama in a BCS bowl, Utah can now go quietly back to its usual place of anonymity.

Question four will be, can Lane Kiffin back up his early trash talk?

The answer is a definitive no. Lane Kiffin, you were just busted on all kinds of BS.

You can't back up your talk, you are not an offensive genius (against your first good team you managed just one touchdown), you can't mentor quarterbacks (Crompton is as awful as he was last year), and your late try of contrition by backing off your trash talk with all the praise of Florida now makes you look two face as well as stupid.

The world would have at least had some respect for you had you just been consistent.  Lane Kiffin, week three saw you exposed on all fronts.

Question five is, because Florida was played closely by Tennessee, is there a chink in the Gator Armour?

Tennessee did show that a team with a good defense can cause Florida problems.  Stronger SEC teams are going to watch that film and see a team that does in fact have chinks in the armour.

To say that Florida has been exposed would be going a bit too far, but to question whether they're beatable is certainly debatable.

Question six, and the final one for week three is, is Alabama a real contender or just the team that will play Florida for the SEC championship?

Greg McElroy is certainly more like a championship quarterback than a first-year starter, so far the offensive line has answered every question thrown at them, and the running backs are stellar no matter what combination is put on the field.

Add that to one of the nation's best defenses and you have a legitimate contender.

They may not have played some of the tough teams in the SEC yet, but the win over Virginia Tech certainly showed that they can and will defeat nationally ranked powers.

Yes, the weeks ahead may answer more questions as well as cause many new ones. As hard as it is to believe, one quarter of the regular season is now over.

There's a lot more excitement ahead.

*** Late addition ***  I guess we can add that BYU is just a pretender as Florida State just handed BYU a HUGE loss.  THAT question was also very definitively answered.
