England's meeting against Lithuania on Monday night should have been a happy occasion, as the Three Lions celebrated a successful Euro 2016 qualifying run, but the fixture turned sour after both sets of fans clashed at the LFF Stadionas.

UEFA has now opened disciplinary proceedings against the English and Lithuanian FAs, per Paul Kelso.

The Telegraph's Matt Law detailed that home supporters were angered by the fact England fans had been allowed to purchase tickets in the home section, which led to riot police having to intervene in the incident:

As the Lithuania fans appeared to set upon visiting supporters behind the goal England defended in the first half, riot police moved in to form a human wall. Rather than try to eject the England fans, the riot police penned Lithuania supporters into one corner.

And after Ross Barkley broke the deadlock for England, the riot police sprayed liquid at the Lithuania fans to stop them getting at the celebrating visiting supporters as the situation threatened to turn ugly.

Paul Hirst of Press Association Sport shared a video of the altercation:

Ross Barkley's deflected strike and an own goal put visitors England 2-0 up at half-time, before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made it 3-0.

As noted by the Independent's Glenn Moore, those English fans who made their way into the home end of the venue in Vilnius did so outside of the FA's usual ticket allocation:

Law goes on to detail that the Lithuania Football Association are "likely to be fined by UEFA" for the role they played in failing to properly distance the two sets of supporters, which could have avoided any violence.
