Gianni VerschuerenOct 11, 2015

The teams in Groups D, F and I reached the conclusion of the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign on Sunday, with Germany, Poland and Albania joining the list of squads that have already qualified. Ireland, Denmark and Hungary finished third in their respective groups and will move to the play-offs.

Ireland lost 2-1 in Poland, ending their bid to pass the Poles in the standings, and the hosts nearly overtook Germany at the top of Group D as well, as the world champions needed a late winner to beat Georgia 2-1.

Scotland cruised past Gibraltar, winning 6-0, while Portugal beat Serbia 21 in a lively encounter. Here's a look at Sunday's results and Monday's fixtures:

Recap

Grzegorz Krychowiak and Robert Lewandowski ended the Irish hopes of qualifying directly for Euro 2016 on Sunday with one goal each in the first half, canceling out Jonathan Walters' equaliser from the penalty spot.

Due to the head-to-head results between both teams, all the Irish needed was a single goal in the second half, but manager Martin O'Neill's men looked toothless throughout the night, all but handing the Poles automatic qualification.

Irish comedian Dara O Briain tried to look on the bright side:

Max Kruse scored a late winner for Germany, keeping the world champions in the top spot in Group D after Jaba Kankava's unexpected equaliser. Thomas Muller had opened the scoring.

Scotland had little left to play for but still put on a good show against minnows Gibraltar, with Steven Fletcher stealing the headlines with a hat-trick.

Portugal ended their campaign with a 2-1 win over Serbia, having already locked up the top position in Group I. Albania will join them at Euro 2016, while Denmark will enter the play-offs.

The Serbs ended the match with just nine players, as both Aleksandar Kolarov and Nemanja Matic received their marching orders minutes apart. As shared by Pete Graves of Sky Sports, the match really got out of hand late:

Nani and Joao Moutinho took care of the scoring for the visitors, while Zoran Tosic scored Serbia's only goal.

In Group I's other match, Albania cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over Armenia, passing Denmark in the standings in the process. Kamo Hovhannisyan scored an own goal after nine minutes, setting the stage for a one-sided affair.

In Group F, Northern Ireland took top honours thanks to a 1-1 draw against Finland. The point was enough to stay ahead of Romania, who crushed Faroe Islands 3-0, while Greece shocked Hungary 4-3. The Hungarians will move to the play-offs.

Paulus Arajuuri equalised late for the Fins after Craig Cathcart had opened the scoring, but that didn't dampen the celebrations of the visiting team. It marks just the first time Northern Ireland have won a qualifying group and their first trip to a major tournament since the 1986 World Cup.

The Daily Mirror's David Anderson believes this qualifying campaign was a greater achievement than any before it for the team:

As shared by PA Dugout, manager Michael O'Neill is convinced luck had nothing to do with it:

Constantin Budescu scored twice in Romania's 3-0 win over Faroe Islands, while Greece and Hungary served up a spectacular show for the fans. The Greeks have endured a miserable qualifying campaign and finish bottom of the group, but that didn't stop them from pushing to end their run on a high note.

Having scored just three goals entering the match, Greece put four past Hungary, with Panagiotis Tachtsidis scoring a brace and the winning goal.
