The outstanding times turned in today should be no surprise, as the Chicago Marathon is one of the six major marathons in the world, alongside the Boston, Tokyo, London, Berlin and New York. Chumba had previously won in Chicago, and in Tokyo, as well, where he holds the course record at 2:05:42.

The women's field was paced by Florence Kiplagat of Kenya at 2:23:33. Yebrgual Melese of Ethiopia finished 10 seconds behind her to place second, and fellow Ethiopian Birhane Dibaba took third at 2:24:24.

American Deena Kastor placed seventh, but set a new U.S. Masters record for the marathon. According to Runner's World, the 42-year-old's time of 2:27:47 took almost a full minute off the old mark. Kastor's record-setting performance came 10 years to the day after she won the Chicago Marathon in 2005.
