Cal vs. Utah: Score, Highlights and Twitter Reaction

Alec NathanOct 10, 2015

Saturday evening started with two undefeated Pac-12 teams, but only one remains after the No. 5 Utah Utes (5-0) survived a scare and defeated the No. 23 California Golden Bears 30-24 at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

The Golden Bears (5-1) had a shot to pull off the upset as quarterback Jared Goff drove Cal down the field with time running out, but the offense ultimately stalled and turned the ball over on downs.

Overall, Goff was uncharacteristically sloppy, throwing a career-high five interceptions—including a crucial fourth-quarter pick in Utah territory that wasted one of the Golden Bears' best second-half drives.

The potential No. 1 pick in the 2016 NFL draft tossed four interceptions in a first half that amounted to a turnover-fest, and according to CBS Sports' Dane Brugler, it was just the fourth time in Goff's career that he tossed multiple interceptions in a game.

To put the five interceptions into perspective, Goff entered the game with just four all season. He also became the first player this year to throw four picks in a half, per ESPN College Football on Twitter.

ESPN.com's David Lombardi summed up Goff's wild night, which included 340 passing yards and two touchdown tosses:

Devontae Booker starred for a Utah team that did a better job of controlling the line of scrimmage all night long. The senior rushed 34 times for 222 yards and two touchdowns. According to the Salt Lake Tribune's Matthew Piper, it was the second 200-yard rushing day of Booker's career.

Utah quarterback Travis Wilson put forth a commendable effort, but he couldn't lead the Utes to a single second-half touchdown. Instead, Utah had to settle for a pair of field goals as countless possessions were squandered and Cal threatened to pull off the upset. A third-quarter fumble by Booker that led to a California touchdown was another blemish on the Utes' otherwise solid night.

Wilson threw two first-half interceptions, but a 54-yard connection with wide receiver Cory Butler-Byrd helped the dual-threat signal-caller atone for those turnovers, per the Pac-12 Networks:

Wilson finished with 170 yards on 16-of-26 passing while rushing 12 times for 49 yards.

As Goff's numbers indicated, turnovers were the story of the evening. And while a couple of his interceptions can be chalked up to poor decision-making, Utah's defense deserves credit for disrupting the flow of one of the nation's top-rated passers.

As Bleacher Report's Matt Miller observed, Utah was aided by a sturdy defensive front:

Defensive coordinator John Pease had his unit in peak form along the line of scrimmage. His front seven provided ample pressure throughout the evening, and it was enough to rattle Goff on a few crucial occasions.

Combine that defensive productivity with Booker's ability to pace the offense, and Utah was the stronger side in the trenches. In fact, California never got its running game going, and the offense devolved into a one-dimensional show that put all the pressure on Goff's shoulders. Vic Enwere was Cal's leading rusher with nine carries for 33 yards.

It was another statement win for a Utah team that continues to assume the form of a legitimate College Football Playoff contender.

With wins over Oregon, California and Michigan, the Utes' resume is growing more impressive by the week, according to Fox Sports' Stewart Mandel:

At this point, it's worth wondering if Utah has already survived the most difficult stretch of its schedule.

Upcoming dates against Arizona State, USC and Washington won't be easy, but all three of those teams have proved to be streaky. A Nov. 21 meeting with UCLA in Salt Lake City could be the game that stands in the way of Utah stringing together an undefeated regular season.

California, on the other hand, will benefit from a bye week before traveling to Los Angeles to face UCLA in a showdown between two of the nation's most prolific passers. Back-to-back games against USC and Oregon in the two weeks following that game will test Cal's resolve, but with Goff at the helm, head coach Sonny Dykes' side should be able to make some noise in a fiercely competitive Pac-12.

Postgame Reaction

According to California's official Twitter account, Goff wasn't discouraged by Saturday's performance:

In the winning locker room, Wilson admitted Utah could have pieced together a more proficient evening on offense, per Piper:

Piper also relayed some strong words from a member of the Utes defense:
