Don't Be Surprised with Greg McElroy: We Told You So
So far this season, Greg McElroy is on course to break all of John Parker Wilson's single-season records. He looks as shaky in his first year of starting as the Tide's quarterback as Joe Montana did in his first Super Bowl.
The letdown everybody thought would happen did not occur. In fact the position is stronger now than in many years.
For some around the country and even in the SEC, McElroy's stellar performance comes as a huge surprise.
But should it have?
Not if you've read what has been reported by the this author as well as many others who cover the Crimson Tide. Pretty much all the good reporters have been warning in unison to the unknowing the arm, the touch and the smarts that make Greg McElroy the consummate field general he is turning out to be.
Last week, McElroy broke an all time Alabama record with 14 straight completions. This week he started the first half by throwing only one ball that wasn't or couldn't be caught. Preston Dial dropped a sure touchdown right in his hands and only one pass missed the target.
Granted Florida International University and North Texas are not SEC caliber teams, but McElroy did shine in the defeat of the number seven team in the nation at the time, Virginia Tech.
But the main thing to keep in mind is that of all the balls thrown so far this season in excess of 30 yards or more, every ball has hit the receiver in dead stride and in both hands with just one being dropped.
People with knowledge of what was going on in practice knew that in practice, McElroy throwing against that fearsome first team defense was completing almost every bomb he attempts.
That has been a sword that Nick Saban has unscabbared effectively when needed this season. They have used against every opponent so far this year.
And Greg McElroy will continue to be the Alabama's biggest weapon on offense this year. Don't be surprised when he continues his run through the SEC, after all, we told you so.
