Poland vs. Republic of Ireland: Date, Time, Live Stream for Euro 2016 Qualifier

Matt JonesOct 10, 2015

It’ll be winner takes all in Warsaw on Sunday, as Poland and the Republic of Ireland battle it out for a spot in the finals of the 2016 European Championships.

A draw for Poland against Scotland on Thursday and a remarkable win for the Republic of Ireland against world champions Germany leave both of these nations on the same amount of points. A draw of 2-2 or higher or a win will be enough to see Ireland through, while Poland must draw 1-1, 0-0 or win to book their place in the finals.

It’s set to be a remarkable climax to what has been a pulsating Group D. Here are the key viewing details for the match and a closer look at how this one is likely to pan out:

Republic of Ireland Give Themselves a Chance

DUBLIN, IRELAND - OCTOBER 08: Shane Long of Republic of Ireland celebrates scoring the opening goal team mates in front of the fans during the UEFA EURO 2016 Qualifier group D match between Republic of Ireland and Germany at the Aviva Stadium on October

Ever since the Irish national team moved from Lansdowne Road to the much-glitzier Aviva Stadium, the supporters haven’t had a big win over an illustrious nation to celebrate. Thursday’s 1-0 triumph over a star-studded Germany team changed that.

Shane Long bagged the winner for the home side on the night, with the victory giving Ireland a realistic chance of qualifying as one of the top two sides in the group. After such a historic occasion, there will be massive momentum going into the clash against the Polish too.

Sky Sports News HQ outlined what Martin O’Neill’s team needs to do in order to get through to next summer’s major tournament:

You wouldn’t bet against them, either. Already this team has shown its resilience on the road by getting a draw against Germany in Dortmund, and there are players in the squad willing to put everything on the line for their country. It’s a tough ask, but as the visitors the pressure will be high when these two do meet.

Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage is backing O’Neill’s men to get the job done in Poland on Sunday:

Ireland remain the underdogs to progress, though. Poland are a very capable opponent and showed their own durability by snatching a late, late equaliser against Scotland, drawing 2-2. It was a goal which means a 1-1 draw or a stalemate will be good enough for them on Sunday, but in front of a packed home crowd, there will be an onus on them to attack from the off.

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND - OCTOBER 08: Robert Lewandowski of Poland celebrates after he scores during the UEFA EURO 2016 qualifier between Scotland and Poland at Hampden Park on October 08, 2015 in Glasgow, Scotland. (Photo by Ian MacNicol/Getty)

With a player like Robert Lewandowski available, it’d be peculiar for Poland not to play an offensive style. After all, the Bayern Munich man is in scintillating form at the moment, carrying his stunning goalscoring at domestic level onto the international stage.

As we can see here courtesy of Squawka Football, his recent goalscoring statistics are little short of ridiculous:

Poland have other obvious talents too, with the direct threat of Jakub Blaszczykowski and destructive midfield play of Grzegorz Krychowiak tough to nullify. Still, Ireland will go into this one with confidence, with a raucous away backing and knowing that even if they were to fall short, they’ll still be in the playoffs for Euro 2016.

Sadly for this determined Ireland side, they’ll most likely have to make do with the consolation prize. Beating Germany at the Aviva was an incredible achievement, but going away from home and producing a performance of similar defensive perfection will be difficult. Stopping Lewandowski seems an impossible ask at the moment too.

Prediction: Poland 2-0 Republic of Ireland
