Euro 2016 Qualifying: Qualified Teams, Group Permutations and Tables

Rory MarsdenOct 7, 2015

The final fixtures in the Euro 2016 qualifiers take place over the coming week, with many of the top teams still scrapping to secure their place at the tournament, which will be held in France.

The top two from all nine groups automatically qualify along with the best third-placed team. The eight remaining third-placed teams face play-offs to make up the numbers.

Austria, Czech Republic, England and Iceland have already guaranteed qualification and, with hosts France, will make up five of the 24 teams competing at the 2016 European Championship.

That leaves 19 places up for grabs. Read on for the current standings in each qualifying group and an explanation of the various permutations that remain.

Qualifying Permutations

Group A

Iceland86111531219
Czech Republic86111610619
Turkey8332119212
Netherlands83141310310
Latvia8044416-124
Kazakhstan8026516-112

The Netherlands are in serious danger of not making it to the 2016 European Championship, a scenario that seemed unthinkable when they came third at last year's World Cup.

Iceland and the Czech Republic have already sealed the top two spots in Group A, and Turkey currently lie in third place, two points ahead of the Dutch.

The Netherlands' final two qualifiers are away to Kazakhstan and home to the Czechs, and the Dutch likely need two victories—Turkey are away to Pavel Vrba's men and host Iceland—to be in with a chance of moving into third spot and making the playoffs.

Group B

Wales853092718
Belgium85211731417
Israel8413149513
Bosnia and Herzegovina83231210211
Cyprus83051213-19
Andorra8008330-270

Group B-leading Wales need just a point from their final two qualifiers—against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Andorra—to book a place at their first major tournament since 1958, per BBC Sport's Rob Phillips.

Belgium should take one of the top spots, as they are away at pointless Andorra—effectively a guaranteed win for the Red Devils—ahead of a home clash with Israel, who are four points back from them at present.

Third-placed Israel themselves need to ensure they do not concede their spot to Bosnia and Herzegovina, who are two points further back. They can guarantee the play-off spot by picking up four points against Cyprus and the Belgians.

Group C

Spain87011831521
Slovakia8611135819
Ukraine8512123916
Belarus8215714-77
Luxembourg8116419-154
FYR Macedonia8107616-103

Reigning European champions Spain need one win from their final two games, against Luxembourg and Ukraine, to guarantee their place in France.

Coach Vicente del Bosque is clearly confident his side can qualify from Group C with ease, as he has left striker Diego Costa out of his squad, per Bleacher Report UK:

Slovakia currently hold a vital three-point lead over Ukraine in the likely battle for second place behind Spain, and a victory in one of their remaining clashes, they host Belarus and travel to Luxembourg, will seal their automatic qualification.

Group D

Germany86112271519
Poland85212972217
Republic of Ireland84311751215
Scotland83231410411
Georgia8206514-96
Gibraltar8008246-440

In Group D, the key clash is Scotland's meeting with Poland on Thursday. Should the Scots lose, they will be unable to even claim a play-off spot.

However, should the Scots beat Poland and the Republic of Ireland lose at home to Germany, there would only be one point separating third and fourth with a game to go.

Germany need just a point to qualify automatically, and Poland only require a win—as long Ireland do not beat the world champions.

Group E

England88002632324
Switzerland8503168815
Slovenia84041510512
Estonia831446-210
Lithuania8305614-89
San Marino8017127-261

In Group E, England wrapped up top spot thanks to eight wins in eight games—the Three Lions are the only team in qualifying with a 100 per cent record.

Second-placed Switzerland can guarantee joining them by picking up four points from their final two games, but Slovenia could pip them if they finish level on points because of the their head-to-head record.

Estonia's only chance of automatic qualification is to beat both England and Switzerland and hope for losses from those two teams directly above them.

Group F

Northern Ireland8521126617
Romania844071616
Hungary834164213
Finland831478-110
Faroe Islands8206512-76
Greece803528-63

Northern Ireland's path to the finals will be secured with just two points from their remaining Group F matches against Greece and Finland.

Second-placed Romania have three points on Hungary in third, but an inferior head-to-head record could come back to haunt them if they do not beat both Finland and the Faroe Islands.

Hungary face Greece and the Faroe Islands in their final encounters, while Finland have an outside chance of making the play-offs if they win both of their matches.

Group G

Austria87101631322
Russia84221741314
Sweden8332119212
Montenegro832388011
Liechtenstein8125221-195
Moldova8026312-92

In Group G, it is a fight for the second automatic-qualification spot behind Austria. Second-placed Russia are in the driving seat, as they are two points clear of Sweden and three clear of Montenegro and face Moldova and the Montenegrins in their final two fixtures.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic's Sweden side can guarantee at least a playoff spot by claiming four points from their matches against Liechtenstein and Moldova.

Failure to do so could see Montenegro swoop in and snatch third spot, but they would likely need to beat both Austria and Russia to do so.

Group H

Italy8530115618
Norway8512108216
Croatia*84311651114
Bulgaria822479-28
Azerbaijan8134613-76
Malta8026313-102
*Croatia have had 1 point deducted

Italy and Norway are guaranteed to finish in the top three in Group H. The Azzurri can claim their spot at the finals with a win over Azerbaijan on Saturday.

Even a draw or defeat to Azerbaijan could be enough so long as their result is not bettered by Croatia when they face Bulgaria.

The Norwegians face Malta and the Italians in their final two matches, and their inferior head-to-head record against Croatia puts them in slight danger of being pipped to second spot if they don't win both.

Bulgaria still have the slightest of chances of taking the third spot in the group, but they are reliant on lowly Malta beating Croatia.

Group I

Portugal650184415
Denmark733184412
Albania632173411
Armenia7025511-62
Serbia *6114511-61
*Serbia have had 3 points deducted

Portugal need only a point against Denmark on Thursday—or Serbia on Sunday—to ensure their automatic qualification, but the second-placed Danes are at the mercy of Albania.

As Albania have two matches remaining—at home to Serbia and away against Armenia—they could leapfrog Denmark into second place no matter the latter's result in their final qualifier against Portugal.

Denmark, though, can secure their top-two spot if they beat Portugal on Thursday and Albania lose to Serbia.
