Rugby World Cup Results 2015: Wednesday Scores, Latest Schedule and Tables

Rory MarsdenOct 7, 2015

South Africa confirmed their spot in the quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup 2015 as they thrashed USA 64-0 on Wednesday with a clinical display at the Olympic Stadium, London.

The Americans managed to stay in touch in the first 40 minutes, but a second-half blitzkrieg from the Springboks—which included a Bryan Habana hat-trick—proved fatal.

The day's second match saw Namibia claim their first-ever World Cup point in a 17-16 defeat to Georgia in Pool B at Sandy Park, Exeter.

South Africa 64-0 USA

Despite their shock defeat to Japan in their first match of the World Cup, South Africa confirmed top spot in Pool B with a crushing victory over the USA.

They started quickly, with centre Damian de Allende running through the U.S. defence—after a quick penalty from Fourie du Preez—and claiming the first score in the seventh minute, per ITV Rugby:

USA put up a strong fight in the forwards, and it wasn't all plain sailing for the Boks as they were made to work.

South Africa claimed a penalty try just before the half-hour mark, but it was something of a surprise to see them go in at the break only 14-0 up, per BBC Sport:

However, Habana extended the South Africa lead just minutes into the second-half, latching on to Du Preez's clever kick.

The Americans began to buckle in the face of the dominant Springbok pack, and in the 47th minute, hooker Bismarck du Plessis went over from close range for his side's fourth try.

A powerful driving maul produced another score from Francois Louw just five minutes later, and Habana scored either side of the hour mark to draw him level with a tournament record, per Opta:

There was no respite for the USA, who just couldn't handle the South African power, and Louw went over from a maul yet again in the 69th minute before Jesse Kriel added another try minutes later.

USA had their best spell of possession in the dying moments of the game, but cruelly it broke down, and Lwazi Mvovo was allowed through for a breakaway score.

Following their opening defeat, the South Africans looked primed for a shock early exit from the competition.

However, they have reasserted themselves as genuine contenders to win this year's World Cup and were ruthless in London on Wednesday.

Namibia 16-17 Georgia

Namibia put up a gallant effort against Georgia in Exeter but could not quite eke out the win they so desperately craved.

In a mammoth first half—it lasted 68 minutes of real time—Namibia took the early points and went 6-0 clear through two Theuns Kotze penalties.

Somehow the African outfit managed to keep Georgia out despite losing two players to the sin bin and being pushed further and further back by their opponents.

The Georgian errors were much too prevalent as they failed to get on the board, and Namibia went in at half-time in a unique position, per Rugby World Cup:

Georgia finally got some points on the scoreboard as they made their pressure count, Mamuka Gorgodze crashing through the defence and over the try-line in the 50th minute.

Lasha Malaghuradze ran in the second score five minutes later to move Georgia 14-6 in front as Namibia looked to be dead on their feet.

However, that was to underestimate the spirit of the Namibian side, and Kotze went over in the corner five minutes from time following his earlier penalty to turn it into a one-point game, per ITV Rugby:

Georgia were able to hold out for their second victory of the tournament, but it was a close-run thing in a highly entertaining game.
