Odds on Where 4-Star WR Freddie Swain Commits on Friday

Tyler DonohueOct 5, 2015

Florida wide receiver Freddie Swain figures to receive plenty of recruiting attention as national signing day approaches, but the 4-star prospect is prepared to reveal his plans this week.

Swain expects to announce a collegiate commitment 3 p.m. ET Friday during a pep rally at North Marion High School, per Ryan Bartow of 247Sports. Several suitors seemingly remain in contention for his services.

The 6'1", 188-pound playmaker carries 25 scholarship offers and saw his recruitment heat up throughout a busy summer. Swain spent time on multiple campuses during the offseason and starred at The Opening, an elite, invite-only prospect showcase held in Oregon.

"Freddie is tremendously talented. His level of understanding for routes as a high school player is unmatched," Opening coach Quincy Avery told Bleacher Report's Sanjay Kirpalani. "Whether he's using a defender and using his body to lean on defenders, or stemming defenders to get even, he's going to be special."

Swain showed off his skill set last season as a junior, catching 52 passes for 841 yards and six touchdowns. He's averaging 72 receiving yards per game this fall, per MaxPreps, snagging two scoring strikes and returning a punt to the end zone.

On the cusp of a decision, Swain has plenty to consider. Rated 29th nationally among wide receivers in 2016 composite class rankings, his choice will greatly impact the team he chooses and alter outlooks for those he spurns.

Here's a peek at top-contending programs, assigning odds for each to ultimately sign Swain.

Florida (2-1)

The new-look Gators are enjoying an offensive resurrection this season under first-year head coach Jim McElwain. Florida is averaging 34 points per game though five contests, helping the team secure a 3-0 start in conference action.

Swain has been a routine visitor to Gainesville, having enjoyed firsthand looks at a young Gators attack led by redshirt freshman quarterback Will Grier.

“They showed they will throw the ball. They aren’t scared to do that,” he told Luke Stampini of 247Sports after attending Florida's victory over Tennessee. “Let it rip, and they finally connected to [Antonio] Callaway at the end and he brought it home.”

The growing success of Callaway, a true freshman with eight receptions and two scores in his past two games, serves as indication McElwain won't hesitate to utilize unproven youngsters on offense.

“They show you they are not afraid to play freshmen. If you do what you do, you’re going to get on the field and play and that’s what happens," Swain told Stampini.

Florida claims 75 percent of experts' predictions in 247Sports' Crystal Ball, including the past nine pledge projections.

Tennessee (4-1)

Swain could turn to another SEC squad if he proves pundits wrong and turns his back on the Gators. Tennessee is in solid shape to emerge as the alternative option, even if he selects Florida on Friday.

The Volunteers will welcome Swain to Knoxville this weekend, per Bartow. Tennessee hosts Georgia, attempting to rebound from back-to-back conference defeats.

Head coach Butch Jones and his staff set this visit up well in advance. Despite an underwhelming first month of the season, Tennessee will attempt to capitalize on established rapport.

“The coaches are phenomenal,” Swain told Danny Parker of Scout.com. “They’re cool, we always chill. Talk on the phone a lot. The campus is beautiful. I can see myself playing there.”

He also shares some history with elite Volunteers quarterback commit Jarrett Guarantano, an Elite 11 finalist. The two shared reps at The Opening as members of the same seven-on-seven squad.

Miami (6-1)

A disheartening loss to Cincinnati last week further thrust the Hurricanes coaching staff into job-security speculation. Miami is far removed from the national dominance that once defined it last decade, and Al Golden appears to be creeping closer toward the unemployment line.

Still, the school's history, acclaimed NFL alumni and unyielding promise to once again return to prominence continue to attract top-flight prospects. The Hurricanes carry America's 11th-best recruiting class in 2016 composite rankings and are listed second overall in the 2017 cycle.

Miami is expected to host Swain for an official visit Oct. 17, per Bartow. The Hurricanes will enter that matchup against Virginia Tech following an emotional showdown with rival Florida State, setting the stage for momentum to spin wildly one way or the other for an embattled regime.

Regardless of what happens while Swain is in attendance, Miami still seems to be a somewhat distant second for his services in the Sunshine State.
