AP College Football Poll 2015: Complete Week 6 Rankings Released

Tim DanielsOct 4, 2015

Week 5 nearly provided a massive shakeup in the rankings, as both No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 Michigan State were pushed to the limit by unranked foes—Indiana and Purdue, respectively. They survived, but No. 3 Ole Miss wasn't as fortunate.

The Rebels were blown out by Florida, a team that is seemingly moving back into national prominence a little quicker than expected. Notre Dame, UCLA and Georgia all came up short as well during a drama-filled Saturday for teams inside the Top 10.

As you'd expect, the upsets have shaken up the Associated Press Top 25 ahead of Week 6. Here's a look at how the AP poll shapes up now along with a comparison to Bleacher Report's rankings:

TCU put together the most impressive performance of any Top 10 team with a 50-7 romp over rival Texas. The Horned Frogs led 30-0 after the first quarter and tallied more than 600 yards of total offense as they moved to 5-0.

Head coach Gary Patterson doesn't want his players getting overly excited about the win, though. He took a New England Patriots approach to the situation, as highlighted by Carlos A. Mendez of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

"Let me just say this. Nothing's changed since last week. Won a ballgame. Now we're on to Kansas State," Patterson said.

The week's other major statements came from Clemson and Alabama.

The Tigers held off a late rally attempt by the Fighting Irish to emerge as a legitimate playoff contender. They have a favorable schedule on the horizon, with a Nov. 7 clash against Florida State looming large, though they can't overlook Georgia Tech next week, either.

As for the Crimson Tide, they understood losing to Georgia would have put them in a dire playoff situation with two losses. They certainly played like a team with its back against the wall, crushing the Bulldogs to swiftly move back into the playoff conversation.

Of the two big winners, Aaron Brenner of the Post and Courier is more bullish on Alabama:

Other notable results included Texas A&M continuing its rise by knocking off Mississippi State, Oklahoma cruising past West Virginia and Iowa quietly moving to 5-0 with an upset of Wisconsin.

Desmond Howard of ESPN summed up the entire outlook:

Just the sheer number of crucial games shows the season is beginning to heat up. Conference play always makes things a little more interesting as teams battle for those coveted playoff spots.

The trend continues in Week 6. TCU should face a much tougher test from Kansas State. Utah gets another tricky test from California. And LSU battles a South Carolina squad desperate to make an impact after a sluggish start.

Ohio State (vs. Maryland) and Michigan State (vs. Rutgers) should both be in good shape, but as Week 5 almost illustrated, the biggest upsets come out of nowhere.
