Recap: BYU Cougars Overcome Mistakes to Defeat UConn Huskies 30-13
The BYU Cougars didn't win in beautiful fashion Friday night.
But they won nonetheless, putting their season back on track after losing their last two games.
Cougars quarterback Tanner Mangum overcame two interceptions, ending the game with 365 yards, two touchdowns and the two picks.
Mangum got plenty of help from his wide receivers, who were consistently more physical than Connecticut's defenders.
Senior Terenn Houk led the Cougars with six catches for 129 yards and senior Mitch Mathews caught both BYU touchdown passes in a second half UConn will want to forget.
The Huskies forced a Mangum interception on a 4th-and-1 play early in the third quarter, but the offense only gained 16 yards and settled for a field goal. It was three of only six total points scored in the second half by the Huskies.
Connecticut quarterback Bryant Shirreffs was hindered by a struggling offensive line. Brigham Young tied its season-high sack mark in the first half with five. Both of Shirreffs' interceptions came on plays where the young passer simply tried to do too much.
He finished the game with 168 passing yards and a touchdown to go along with the interceptions.
Cougars linebacker Sione Takitaki was ejected in the first half after being called for targeting on a hit on Shirreffs. The Huskies scored their only touchdown of the night on the next play.
The Huskies have now lost three games in a row.
