Report: Gardner Likely to Undergo Lisfranc Surgery
Tuesday, Sept. 29
Gardner left Sunday's game against the New York Jets with an apparent foot injury, and he was seen afterward on crutches and wearing a walking boot.
The 29-year-old offensive lineman was placed on IR, and he is expected to undergo Lisfranc surgery on his right foot, per Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ Advance Media made mention of how significant a loss Gardner is to Philly's offensive front:
Gardner, who was a sixth-round pick by the Miami Dolphins in 2009, started eight games for the Eagles at right guard last season and claimed the full-time starting job entering 2015.
His performance last season and during the preseason prompted the Eagles to sign him to a three-year extension earlier this month.
He was replaced by Matt Tobin in Week 3, and every indication is that Tobin will be the team's starter moving forward.
Head coach Chip Kelly's offense has struggled mightily thus far as the Eagles are averaging a mere 2.7 yards per carry and are passing for just 227 yards per game.
It can be argued that Gardner won't be a huge loss since Philly's line struggled even with him in the lineup, but unless Tobin somehow comes through with markedly better play, life just got more difficult for quarterback Sam Bradford, running back DeMarco Murray and the 1-2 Eagles as a whole.
