Eagles Add Caleb Sturgis to Replace Parkey
Tuesday, Sept. 29
The Eagles announced the moves Tuesday, noting Parkey was placed on season-ending injured reserve.
How Parkey's Absence and Sturgis' Addition Will Impact Eagles' Kicking Game
Parkey was among the best kickers in the league last year, making the Pro Bowl and finishing second in total points (150). The 23-year-old was also an impressive 8-of-10 on field goals from 40 yards and beyond in 2014, giving Kelly and the Eagles offense a good safety valve when the team failed to crack the red zone.
According to Fox Sports' Mike Garafolo, Philly ultimately decided between Sturgis and Kai Forbath to take over for Parkey.
Given Sturgis' numbers, Forbath might have been the better option. In two years, Sturgis has made just 77.5 percent of his field-goal attempts, including 60.6 percent from 40 or more yards.
The Eagles' success or failure won't hinge entirely on Sturgis, but if he misses a critical field goal or two, Kelly will only find himself under more pressure.
