Premier League Table: Week 7 Standings, Full Weekend Recap After Sunday's Scores
Crystal Palace beat Watford, 1-0, thanks to a Yohan Cabaye penalty in Sunday's lone Premier League fixture. The result didn't alter the picture at the top, where Manchester rivals United and City swapped places after Saturday's action.
United reached the top after beating seemingly already doomed Sunderland at Old Trafford. Earlier in the day, City were flattened by a second-half revival from Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.
Meanwhile, champions Chelsea battled back from two down to earn a point at Newcastle United. Yet the result still leaves Jose Mourinho's squad eight points behind first place.

Cabaye struck from the spot with less than 20 minutes to go to help Palace hand Watford their first home defeat of the season. The visitors won the penalty when full-back Allan Nyom was judged by referee Anthony Taylor to have brought down winger Wilfried Zaha in the box.
WhoScored.com detailed just how long it's been since Watford were breached at home in the league:
Zaha was a consistent menace for the Hornets defence throughout. Palace striker Dwight Gayle also missed a host of excellent chances.
Zaha, Gayle and Co. have now moved up to sixth in the table.
The big news from Saturday involved United seizing the top spot. Manager Louis van Gaal's confident and efficient team saw off Sunderland, 3-0, thanks to goals from Memphis Depay, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata.
The latter was the star of the show for the Red Devils. Squawka detailed how effective the Spaniard was in forward areas:
It was Mata's smart cutback that teed up Depay for a tap-in during first-half stoppage time. He later capped things with a smart finish as a reminder of his quality.
Mata has become a hugely influential figure at Old Trafford. Van Gaal's squad has been built on functional types, particularly in the midfield. Players such as Morgan Schneiderlin, Michael Carrick and Bastian Schweinsteiger specialise in keeping games tight and possession safe.
But Mata is the one who plays between the lines. It's the former Chelsea man who adds a flourish to United's otherwise steady approach play.
With Mata's flair combining with Van Gaal's ideas on compact structures and wear-down possession, United have the sort of mix that wins titles.
Mata helped United go top after a suddenly fragile City came undone in north London, resulting in a painful 4-1 defeat. One up courtesy of Kevin De Bruyne, the Citizens were overrun by a torrent of goals that began with Eric Dier's disputed strike.
Tottenham full-back Kyle Walker appeared clearly offside in the build-up. City boss Manuel Pellegrini referenced the non-call in his post-match interview, according to the club's official Twitter feed:
Offside or not, City were still subsequently breached by Toby Alderweireld, Harry Kane and Erik Lamela. The latter was a constant thorn in City's side, as noted by WhoScored.com:
City haven't looked like the same team since Spanish pass master David Silva suffered an injury. The midfielder is the key to the flowing brand of football Pellegrini preaches.
Last season's runners-up need to find better ways to cope without their creator-in-chief. Perhaps moving the effective De Bruyne into a central area would help.
Finding a creative force certainly hasn't been a problem for Arsenal, though. The Gunners boast two of the Premier League's best in Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla.
They were hugely influential in Arsenal's impressive 5-2 away win over Leicester City, according to Squawka:
Cazorla's assist set up Theo Walcott to score Arsenal's first goal, an equaliser after Leicester's Jamie Vardy had found the net for the hosts. Walcott's finish was a real back-in-the-day Arsenal goal.
After Vardy headed against the bar, Sanchez and Ozil combined to play their way out. The former then found Cazorla in space, and the Premier League's most underrated player slipped a pass between the lines for Walcott to put away.
The whole lightning-fast, back-to-front move was a throwback to the days when Nicolas Anelka and Thierry Henry roamed up top for the Gunners.
Sanchez then bagged two of his three goals on the day. The second was created by Ozil, via a superbly lofted pass from the edge of the box.
Sanchez completed his hat-trick to make it 4-1 before Vardy grabbed a consolation. In stoppage time, sub Olivier Giroud added gloss for the Gunners who were irresistible going forward.
Things didn't run as smoothly for Chelsea at bogey ground St. James' Park. The Magpies went two up thanks to Ayoze Perez and talented summer import Georginio Wijnaldum.
But substitutes Ramires and Willian replied to give the ailing reigning champions a point.
Speaking with Sky Sports after the game, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho offered a stinging critique of his side's first-half display (h/t SkySports.com): "I think in the first half from zero to 10—minus one. That bad."
The stalemate continued Mourinho's wretched run at St. James' Park, according to the league's official Twitter account:
Mourinho has a lot of work to do to lift what has looked a flat team this season.
Speaking of a lift, that's just what Brendan Rodgers received when Liverpool outlasted Aston Villa 3-2 at Anfield. James Milner opened the scoring before a Daniel Sturridge brace counteracted a two-goal salvo from Villa target man Rudy Gestede.
Speaking on the Sunday Supplement, journalist Paul Hayward of the Daily Telegraph described the pressure surrounding Rodgers' position as unfair (h/t SkySports.com): "I think he's a good manager who needs the support of the club and most of all needs better recruitment."
Hayward has a point, but Rodgers' constant tactical tinkering, which often results in wholesale changes to formations during games, hardly helps Liverpool. What will help is keeping a natural finisher like Sturridge fit.
Elsewhere, Norwich City were denied a vital away win when Cheikhou Kouyate snatched an equaliser in injury time for West Ham United to level things at 2-2. Robbie Brady had given the visitors an early lead, only to be answered by Diafra Sakho.
Substitute winger Nathan Redmond put the Canaries back in front late on, but the newly promoted team couldn't hold out.
One player who shone for Norwich was midfielder Wes Hoolahan. He continued to be a prolific supplier of chances, as he as all season, per Squawka:
Southampton used goals from new signing Virgil van Dijk, Dusan Tadic and the mercurial Sadio Mane to see off Swansea City. The Swans could only manage a late consolation from the spot, courtesy of Gylfi Sigurdsson.
Finally, Stoke City survived being pegged back by Premier League new boys Bournemouth at the Britannia Stadium. Jonathan Walters put the Potters ahead, but Dan Gosling restored parity for the Cherries.
Yet there was still time for underrated striker Mame Biram Diouf to head in a winner and lift Stoke out of the drop zone.
While that's welcome news for the Potters, champions Chelsea still need the results that will get them back into the title race. It's a race currently bossed by the red half of Manchester, but Arsenal and City won't be shook off so easily.
