NHL Short Notes
VAIVE GOING TO COURT
It was far from a perfect summer for former Toronto Maple Leafs captain Rick Vaive who got into trouble with the law on July 14 for impaired driving. This 50 year-old who became the first Leaf in franchise history to score 50 goals (1982) was operating a motor vehicle after a charity golf tournament with an excess of 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood. Vaive who played for the Vancouver Canucks, Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks, and Buffalo Sabres in his career was arrested just north of Toronto after a concerned female called the police after seeing Vaive’s car swerving on the road. On Wednesday Vaive who, scored 441 goals in his career, will appear in court.
NIEDERMAYER NEGOTIATING WITH KHL
During the early days of training camp veteran forward Rob Niedermayer who is still without a team has been in the middle of some negotiations with the (CSKA) Moscow Red Army of the Kontinental Hockey League. This former 1993 Florida Panthers first round draft choice has received some offers from NHL teams but nothing that has satisfied him. Last season the 34 year-old scored 21 points with the Anaheim Ducks. In his career Niedermayer who won the Stanley Cup with Anaheim in 2007 has accumulated 428 points in 15 seasons. Niedermayer said that he will wait another week to see if an NHL offer comes that will satisfy him financially before making up his mind on whether to play in the KHL.
