Manchester United vs. Ipswich Town: Score and Reaction from 2015 Capital One Cup

Rob BlanchetteSep 23, 2015

Manchester United eased past Ipswich Town 3-0 in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday night to progress to the next round.

Goals from Wayne Rooney, Andreas Pereira and Anthony Martial were enough for United manager Louis van Gaal in a simple nights work for the Old Trafford club.

Van Gaal fielded a strong side for the cup tie and included the talented Pereira, with Marouane Fellaini also gaining a start. New signing Martial was given a rest for the majority of the night, the Frenchman starting on the bench, with Rooney resuming No. 9 responsibilities.

Football blogger Doron Salomon spoke about the huge night ahead for Pereira:

Ipswich had not scored on their last four trips to Old Trafford, and the Championship high flyers couldn't break their duck.

Sports writer Andy Mitten commented on the travelling support of the visitors, and questioned the validity of their early chants:

Pereira started as United's brightest spark on Wednesday night, shining more than any of his team-mates in the early stages.

But it was the old guard that gave United the lead as Rooney slotted away to grab an advantage. The skipper was set free by Daley Blind's laser pass, and the talisman bustled past his marker, carrying the ball into the area and finishing with his left foot.

Bleacher Report UK celebrated Rooney's strike, as the attacker proved he was back once again:

The Times' James Ducker was impressed with Blind's contribution before Rooney's expert finish:

Opta highlighted Rooney's lack of contribution in previous League Cup campaigns:

United failed to increase their lead as the half progressed, with the final ball from midfield lacking quality and direction. Juan Mata and Ashley Young appeared in fine fettle, but they could not find Rooney with any true accuracy.

The home team took their slim advantage into half time, with Ipswich pleased to still be in the match despite conceding the lion's share of the territory.

United came out on the front foot for the second half, with the young Brazilian Pereira once again at the heart of the Red Devils' best work.

And the prodigy was rewarded on the hour-mark as he claimed a well-deserved goal to make it 2-0. The teenager showed a glimpse of his world-class potential, curling the ball home over the wall from a 25-yard free-kick.

The Belgium-born talented excitedly ran away towards the stands—as Old Trafford burst into song and applause.

Ducker congratulated the teenager after Ipswich had kept a strong rearguard:

Ipswich could not find a way to penetrate their hosts' half of the pitch, and despite some good work, it was all too easy for the Red Devils.

United retained the ball with great composure as the clock ran down, and the result never looked in doubt despite a lack of action.

The game ended with a flurry of substitutions, as Phil Jones returned to the United first team after injury, and there was enough time for Martial to enter proceedings, getting his name on the scoresheet in the final minute.

The talent burst into the area past the Ipswich defence, and he slotted the ball away like a striker many years his senior. The match was won for United, and they now progress to the next round.

LvG's team had a comfortable night—but Ipswich put in a credible, if not dangerous, performance.

Rooney being back on the goal trail will delight his manager, with United needing more than Martial's effort if they are to stay near the top of the Premier League table.

Post-Match Reaction

Van Gaal was delighted with his team's efforts on Wednesday night, and could not contain his happiness at the manner of the victory, with a goal for his captain and a clean sheet, per United's official Twitter account:

Juan Mata also congratulated Pereira on his goal for the Red Devils:

United now progress to face Middlesbrough at home in the next round, with the tie taking place on the week commencing October 26.
