WWE Night of Champions 2015 Results: Re-Booking Full Card from PPV
It's always tough to try to re-book a full pay-per-view card, especially when it's from a solid and enjoyable show like Sunday's WWE Night of Champions.
There were a couple of matches which, when put into context, couldn't really have been re-booked any better (more on those later). But the rest of the card did have a bit of potential for improvement, as a number of finishes or even twists could have been thrown in to ramp up the excitement a bit more.
Here's a possible re-booking of five of the seven matches on the main card at Night of Champions, with these two excepted from the rule.
Kevin Owens vs. Ryback: The result can't be argued, as the Intercontinental Championship really did need a new owner. Owens will be a solid champion, and the manner of his victory also felt right in these circumstances.
Owens needs heat after losing a bit of momentum from his explosive debut, so the rake of the eyes to cause the win was fully needed in this scenario. He'll pick up clean wins further down the track as he grows into his role as IC Champ.
The Wyatt Family vs. Chris Jericho, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose: Again, to correctly build up the people involved in the match, The Wyatt Family's win felt right. As did Braun Strowman being the guy to pick up the win and knock out the veteran Chris Jericho. That'll help his growing momentum no end.
Jericho's being the guy to take the loss was also smart, as it enabled him to storm out afterward, clearly frustrated by the result. Hopefully, the subsequent reaction from Reigns and/or Ambrose will develop into an interesting feud in there somewhere.
Dolph Ziggler vs. Rusev
1 of 5
Some would argue that the best booking for this match would have been not to stage it in the first place, but Dolph Ziggler vs. Rusev may have surprised a few people on Sunday.
Without constant bickering from Lana and Summer Rae and slightly more focus on the action going on inside the ring, Ziggler and Rusev put on a pretty decent showing.
There was plenty of physicality and brutality on show, but it still could have been executed a little bit better.
And yet again, the ending was the big problem here, with a ludicrous interference from Summer costing Rusev the match. It would have been much more suitable for someone to get a clean pinfall, or for Rusev to make Ziggler submit to The Accolade.
As much as people want to see the curtain fall on this rivalry, it'll never happen unless WWE let one guy win it cleanly.
Only then can both men move on, hopefully to bigger and better things.
The New Day vs. The Dudley Boyz
2 of 5
There is perhaps an argument to suggest that having The Dudley Boyz win by disqualification at Night of Champions instead of losing cleanly has retained their momentum heading forward into Hell in a Cell.
However, did that need to be the case? This isn't a young upstart pairing who are desperate to build all the momentum and popularity they can get. This is The Dudley Boyz: A loss here and there wouldn't hurt their standing with fans or in the tag division at all.
Plus, a controversial win for The New Day would have increased its heat somewhat, instead of taking the easy option and getting the DQ win.
Xavier Woods could have continued to get under Bubba Ray and D-Von's skin by manipulating a win for his compatriots, allowing the trio to escape with a win and the tag championships.
Charlotte vs. Nikki Bella
3 of 5
Much like the Dolph Ziggler vs. Rusev match before it, Charlotte vs. Nikki Bella managed to surprise a few people at Night of Champions.
That's because WWE concentrated less on antics outside the ring, namely the "Twin Magic" that The Bella Twins had been incorporating lately.
That allowed the rhythm and entertainment value of the match to increase, with both stars playing their parts. Nikki was working as a good, solid heel here, chipping away at Charlotte's injury to good effect and doing her best to win at all costs.
But ultimately, few would complain about the result and manner of the victory, a clean one for Charlotte. So what could have been done differently?
Given how Paige effectively turned on Becky Lynch and Charlotte on Monday's Raw, there's no reason to say she couldn't have done that at Night of Champions. It would have distracted attention from Charlotte's crowning moment somewhat, but still, if WWE were looking for a dramatic turn for Paige, pay-per-view would have been a better setting.
Seth Rollins vs. John Cena
4 of 5
One of the biggest positives to come out of Seth Rollins' lengthy WWE World Heavyweight Championship reign is the pure chemistry he seems to have with John Cena.
The two have produced some really good matches lately, and this bout for the United States Championship was certainly up there with the best.
As for what could have been done differently, in terms of the actual in-ring performances from both men, not that much. There were some great segments, fantastic spots and a result which has at least enabled Rollins to concentrate on his world title reign.
There are a couple of notes to add, though. Granted, it was difficult to orchestrate a controversial ending, given how Rollins had a match immediately after this one, but losing cleanly certainly didn't help his standing as world champion.
Sting could have caused yet another distraction before the match to let Cena win, for example. And why did Cena need to lay out Rollins after the match? Yet again, it made him look weak and vulnerable, and although it created a storyline dynamic wherein the champ had to pick himself up from the floor to fight Sting, that could have been done with him being laid out on the mat by Cena.
Seth Rollins vs. Sting
5 of 5
The main event was a bout that produced one of the most surprising performances of the night from the 56-year-old Sting.
He was sensational against Seth Rollins, bouncing back from a serious bump from being thrown through a table and even leaping from the top rope like a young rookie from NXT.
Rollins also deserves credit for going back-to-back in two seriously good matches, although much like his bout with Cena, there were a couple of things that could have been done differently.
First of all, the ending of the match itself really does need addressing. Sting fans will have been disappointed to see him lose to Rollins full stop, but if it had been done in a way that made The Icon look strong moving forward, you could almost understand it.
So a clean win via a roll-up pin just didn't seem to work at all. It did no man any favors in truth, especially Sting. He's now 0-2 on pay-per-view, both pretty uninspiring and timid defeats. For a wrestling legend like Sting, that's not really that great.
Another controversial Rollins win might have been the answer, or even Kane's rather bizarre interference just before the end of the match. That way, Sting wouldn't have taken the loss, and Rollins could have gone into his feud with The Demon with his title still around his waist.
Did WWE need to inflict another weak defeat on one of the greatest wrestlers of his generation? It's debatable.
