WWE Night of Champions 2015 Results: Worst Booking Decisions from PPV

Graham GSM MatthewsSep 21, 2015

As great of a show as WWE Night of Champions was last night, it wasn't without its flaws. With three championships changing hands, it wasn't anything short of a newsworthy event, but the conclusions to some contests left a lot to be desired.

From the returns of Kane and Chris Jericho to Kevin Owens capturing his first Intercontinental Championship, it was a better show than most fans anticipated going in. That said, Night of Champions is notorious for featuring mind-boggling moments, and this year's installment was no exception.

The following are the worst booking decisions from the pay-per-view.

The Dudley Boyz Defeat The New Day by Disqualification

When The Dudley Boyz returned to WWE one night removed from SummerSlam, they made the tag team scene exciting again. For the first time in seemingly forever, we had a real tag team feud on our hands, and it's been well-handled in recent weeks.

Their initial encounter against each other on the Aug. 31 edition of Raw was entertaining, but the championship rematch at Night of Champions fell short of fans' lofty expectations. It just never felt like it got out of first gear before it abruptly ended.

Worse yet, the finish came when The Dudley Boyz hit the 3D on Kofi Kingston and were closing in on the twin titles before Xavier Woods interfered and the referee called the match due to disqualification. The seasoned veterans had their hands raised, but they didn't walk away with the gold.

It was logical to keep the straps on the hot duo of The New Day, or at least for right now, but the interference finish has been played out in 2015. The Dudley Boyz will be champs before long, but the anticlimactic conclusion to this contest didn't leave fans waiting with bated breath for a rematch.

Summer Rae Costs Rusev a Win Against Dolph Ziggler

There aren't many guarantees in life, but among the few are that the sun will rise, the grass will grow and the Dolph Ziggler-Rusev-Summer Rae love triangle will still be going.

These three, along with Lana, have been embroiled in the single worst program all year since May. Ziggler and Rusev have had what has felt like a million matches against each other as of late, with their most recent encounter occurring at Night of Champions.

They contested a well-wrestled match, but it was difficult for fans to get invested in either competitor because there was nothing at stake. Ziggler winning a somewhat meaningful match was refreshing, but it was only after Summer inadvertently tossed her shoe at Rusev and allowed Ziggler to pin him for the victory.

It might be only a matter of time before Ziggler and Summer join forces, but does anyone honestly care anymore? It would have been better for Ziggler to simply win clean and put this atrocious angle to rest once and for all.

Charlotte Captures the Divas Championship

The last several months in the Divas division have been focused on Nikki Bella attempting to reach the 300-day mark as Divas champion. On the Sept. 14 edition of Raw, she officially became the longest-reigning champ in the title's history when she successfully retained the strap against Charlotte. As a result, WWE set up a rematch between the two competitors for Night of Champions.

With the streak no longer at stake, the rematch meant a heck of a lot less than their Raw outing. Not only that, but Charlotte's win at the pay-per-view was premature since she isn't ready for a run with the title just yet.

Charlotte will undoubtedly be a major player for women's wrestling in the years to come, but of all the Divas to put the belt on right now, she wasn't the best possible option.

It also sent the message that WWE ran with Nikki as champion for as long as it did merely to have her break AJ Lee's record. Once she achieved that milestone, WWE promptly booked her to drop the title.

Besides, there were plenty of other possible outcomes to the match, including Paige costing her teammate the win. Congratulations for Charlotte are surely in order, but she should have been in chase mode for a while longer before finally winning it.
