Floyd Mayweather's Next Steps After Retiring from Historic Boxing Career
Floyd Mayweather is not even a week off of his latest and likely final victory in the ring, a 12-round unanimous-decision win over Andre Berto to secure a perfect 49-0 record. Yet he still has to ensure his fans that they won't be seeing him in the ring anytime soon.
After defeating Berto, the man who has made over $300 million this year alone spoke with the Guardian's Bryan Armen Graham and tried to dispel any thought of him coming back for a 50th fight:
If he does indeed stand by this decision to never enter the ring competitively again, he'll leave the sport as one of the best to ever box, and as one of the wealthiest fighters, too.
But that doesn't mean he is simply going to ride off into the sunset, a bag full of money and perfect record in hand. No, no, for Mayweather, there is much more to retirement than relaxation.
While he might not be putting on the gloves and actually jabbing at opponents, he could be doing so on the silver screen soon, as reported by the TheSweetScience.com's Michael Woods:
He certainly has experience in front of a camera and seems to revel in the spotlight, too. Take his time with the WWE against the Big Show as a prime example:
That's not all for the man nicknamed Money.
He's been getting into the entrepreneurial spirit while also promoting some of his adventures in the music industry, per BoxingScene.com's David P. Greisman:
"We got The Money Team music group, and I’ve also been working with Al [Haymon] for a number of years on the concert promotions. I’ve been promoting concerts throughout the years. The Mayweather Music Group, we have different artists that we’re working with. We got the Bad Medina makeup line [named after Mayweather’s massage therapist, according to FightHype.com]. Melissa Brim [the mother of one of Mayweather’s daughters], she is working on four or five different clothing stores. She already has one.
"
With Mayweather at times seeming like he's in the epicenter of pop culture, rubbing elbows with some of the biggest names in entertainment, the idea of him creating fashionable clothing and promoting popular music doesn't seem so far-fetched.
We've seen athletes dabble in entertainment and clothing during and after their careers before. The most notable example that comes to mind is obviously Michael Jordan. Whether it's his shoe line turned fashion symbol or his role in Space Jam, Jordan is the idyllic sportsman turned businessman after a successful career.
I'm not saying Mayweather will ever reach Jordan's level, but he has the star power, and perhaps more importantly, the money, to become an extremely successful mogul now that his boxing career is over.
