Mayweather vs. Berto Scorecard: Breaking Down Each Judge's Decision

Briggs SeekinsSep 12, 2015

In a fight that was ultimately very easy to score, all three judges awarded Floyd Mayweather a decision against Andre Berto in Las Vegas on Saturday night, by wide margins.

Judge Dave Moretti had the fight 117-111 for Mayweather. Judge Steve Weisfeld gave the pound-for-pound King 10 of 12 rounds, for a 118-110 victory. And in Mayweather's final bout, judge Adalaide Byrd scored every round of the fight for the champ, giving him a 120-108 score.

As would be expected, the judges for this high-profile fight were three of the most experienced in the business. This was Moretti's fifth Mayweather fight in a row.

Earlier this year, he scored 118-110 in favor of Mayweather over Manny Pacquiao. In both of Mayweather's 2014 fights with Marcos Maidana, Moretti scored eight rounds to four in favor of Mayweather.

I thought he scored Mayweather's September 2013 win over Saul Alvarez a bit too close at only eight rounds to four. But at least he didn't completely embarrass himself, as C.J. Ross did in that fight, scoring it a draw.

I thought Morettti was wrong to score for Jose Benavidez over Mauricio Herrera last year, but both of the other judges agreed with him on that one. I also disagreed with him over his 115-113 scorecard for Erislandy Lara in July 2014, but it was hardly an unreasonable card.

Byrd and Weisfeld have similarly respectable records. I disagreed with Weisfeld scoring in favor of Danny Garcia over Lamont Peterson earlier this year, but it was a close fight, and he had it seven rounds to five, so there's nothing outrageous about that.

I thought Byrd had Shawn Porter's win over Adrien Broner earlier this year about a round too close, at 114-112. She gave Keith Thurman all 12 rounds against Robert Guerrero last March, where I thought "The Ghost" deserved two.

But I also felt she was the only one of the three judges to score correctly in Miguel Vazquez's split-decision loss to Mickey Bey in September 2014.

These are three veteran judges who have a good track record for getting fights correct. There is only room for minor quibbles with any of the them on this one.

I also have a small problem with Moretti scoring this fight only nine rounds to three for Mayweather. I frankly can't see three rounds that could have been scored for Berto from even the most generous perspective.

It's particularly surprising when you consider Moretti only gave two rounds to Pacquiao last May. I actually thought that was a reasonable card, but there's no way I can see how Berto won more rounds than Pacquiao did.

Even Weisfeld's 118-110 is a slight stretch, in my opinion. According to Showtime's unofficial judge, Steve Farhood, the only round that both judges gave Berto was Round 9. That was the sole round where I can even see a case for Berto.

The other three rounds they gave Berto between them were basically throwaway, gift rounds. But ultimately, they both scored a one-sided fight, so they were fundamentally correct.

But Byrd's 120-108 shutout was the most accurate of the three. Berto landed a mere 17 percent of his punches for the fight, with every round an exercise in futility.

Byrd was correct to give every round to Mayweather in what might well be his farewell fight.
